Gousse gets his moose

After participating in all 30 years of the Maine moose lottery, Dan Gousse of Wales finally got his moose this season. Gousse won a permit last year but did not get his moose. This time, his wife, Diane, had her name chosen and listed Dan as her subpermittee. Assigned to Zone 5, Dan Gousse shot a 891-pound bull moose with a 52-inch antler span on Sept. 30.

Jr. Maineiacs post two wins, tie

LEWISTON - Lewiston Junior Maineiacs Peewee Travel Hockey started its season off with a flourish, winning two games an dtying one last weekend. 

The sequence opened with a 4-4 road tie against Dover (N.H.) Stars. Lewiston took a 3-2 lead into the third period in a back-and-forth contest before Dover took the lead with a pair of goals. Lewiston notched the tie late in the proceedings. Brendon Croteau and Kyle Ullrich each tallied a goal and an assist. Cameron Stewart and Caleb Labrie each added a goal. Trent Spaulding was netminder for Lewiston.

Mt. Blue, Auburn to meet in Saturday's WMFL final

Mt. Blue and Auburn have qualified for the Western Maine Football League championship game, to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday on Mt. Blue's Kemp Field.

Auburn advanced with an 8-6 victory over rival Lewiston. Top-seeded Mt. Blue blanked Gardiner, 22-0.

In the consolation round, Mountain Valley edged Oxford Hills, 24-19.

LEWISTON - Christiane Villedrouin went undefeated in a very competitive division by defeating Leslie Thayer, whoalso was previously undefeated, in the final match of the season to win the Lewiston Recreation Fall Tennis 'A' division championship.Villedrouin prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). Abby Blaisdell was a close third place, with her only losses to Villedrouin and Thayer.

Giants grab Senior FLY title

LEWISTON - The Twins Variety Senior Giants captured the FLY Football championship with a 33-6 victory over the Lisbon St. Getty Mart Redskins.

Logan Lavoie ran for 37 yards on the opening drive and capped it with a 3-yard touchdown run. Ben Howell added 77 yards, including a 15-yard TD, behind the solid offensive line of Kevin Dillingham, Zach Abisalih, Tanner Pitman, Colin Mannon and Kody Voisine. Eli Cady also reached the end zone twice, and Alex Demers added a TD. Quintarian Brown chipped in 55 yards on the ground.

Turner youth bags moose

On the first day of moose hunting season, Derek Bates, 15, of Turner, bagged a 900-pound moose near Greenville. Bates was guided by Master Maine Guide Michael Morris of Turner. Bates is the son of Lisa Puinch and Duane Bates and the grandson of Les and Martha Bates, all of Turner. He is also the grandson of Noella Landry of Sabattus and the great-grandson of Shirley Lowell of Bethel.

YMCA launches youth basketball

AUBURN - Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is set to begin its 42nd year of youth basketball. The YMCA Co-ed Youth Basketball League serves Auburn, Lewiston and the surrounding communities by affording boys and girls in grades 2 through 6 an opportunity to involve themselves in an organized basketball program.

The Meadows Golf Club in Litchfield hosted 25 local youths ages 6 to 10 for a free golf clinic, "Swing Into Golf." The children were from Monmouth, Litchfield, Richmond, Sabattus, Wales and Gardiner. Golf coaches Karl Swenson of Gardiner Area High School and Mike Pelletier of Oak Hill High School assisted with instruction along with members of the club and the Oak Hill golf team. Each child was accompanied by at at least one parent to help with the instruction and learning. Everyone enjoyed food and drinks.

Phoenix Academy announces toddler belt promotion

Lisbon Jr. Athletic League plans annual meeting

LISBON - The Lisbon Junior Athletic League will be having its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at the MTM Center on School Street. Discussion will include the state of the league, looking at the year-to-date budget and plans for 2010.

LJAL is a non-profit organization supporting youth softball and baseball in Lisbon. Many board positions are open as well as volunteer opportunities. The meeting is a great chance to find out what is available if you would like to be involved but don't know how.

Dirigo athletic boosters hold golf scramble

The Dirigo High School Athletic Boosters hosted their third-annual golf scramble and pig roast Sept. 13. Sixteen teams participated in the funraiser. Pictured from left to right are the low gross winners, Greg Dawson, Butch McKenna, Don Johnson and Frank DiConzo, who posted a score of 55. Net winners were Larry Murphy, Corey Jacques, Cameron Stanley and Ernie Smith with 56. AUBURN - Lewiston Middle School downed Auburn Recreation Department, 28-12, in a Western Maine Football League eighth-grade game that left both teams at 3-2 to conclude the regular season. It set up a playoff rematch at 4 p.m. Thursday in Lewiston. The winner will face the winner of the Mt. Blue Gardiner game for the championship.
