Twin Cities Swim Team starting season

AUBURN - The YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston and the YWCA of Central Maine are preparing to kick-off the 2009-2010 Twin Cities Swim Team Season. The TCST Sea Lions are a co-ed swim team for kids ages 5-18. The collaborative effort of the two organizations offers emphasis on the development of each individual in accordance with his/her abilities and desires.

TURNER - Adolf Martin scored his first career hole-in-one at Turner Highlands Country Club in senior league play last week. Martin aced No. 18 with a driver. Bob Walton, Marc Morin and Marcel Goulette witnessed the feat.

Sr. 'Skins hand Giants first FLY loss of season

LEWISTON - The Lisbon St. Getty Mart Sr. Redskins climbed into a tie for first place in FLY football, handing the Twin's Variety Sr. Giants their first loss of the season, 12-6, in a rain-soaked, double-overtime thriller.

Jeffrey Clark scored the first Redskins touchdown on a 17-yard run in the second quarter. After a scoreless overtime and a huge goal-line stand in the second OT, Joey Gonzalez punched in the winning score from three yards out. The offensive line provided splendid blocking in the poor weather conditions.

Landry, Booker win openers

LEWISTON - The Maine Table Tennis League officially started its 2009-10 season Monday at Lewiston Armory.

Al Landry won the 'A' table, with Sonu Bhatia second. John Booker topped the 'B' table, followed by Normand Berube.

Registration is still underway for the season. The league is open for play four nights a week, Monday through Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Outlaws take Twin Cities title

AUBURN - The West Division champion Auburn Outlaws topped the Lewiston Division champ Skindivers, 10-7, to sweep a tight two-game series andn capture the Twin Cities softball championship.

Outlaws finished the season with 12 straight victories.

Winning pitcher James Bixby also went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in the title game. Jeff Roy was 3-for-3. Ryan Pleau, Greg Brochu, Jim Buckhoff, Reggie Emery and Allan Hurd each delivered two hits, with Brochu driving in a pair of runs and Pleau, Buckhoff, Emery and Hurd each knocking in one.

NASC springs upsets, wins Auburn co-ed crown

AUBURN - Ranked seventh during the regular season in the Auburn Major Softball Co-Ed league, New Auburn Social Club rallied to win the championship with a thrilling playoff run. NASC topped No. 2 Janet McCarthy and No. 3 Red Snappers before sealing the deal with a pair of victories over No. 4 Androscoggin Title.

Auburn Rec Grade 8 gridders stay unbeaten

AUBURN - The Auburn Recreation eighth-grade football team defeated Gardiner, 14-0, to stay undefeated in the Western Maine Football League.

Jameson Rodrigues scrambled for one touchdown and hit Caleb Spruill for another score through the air to lead Auburn. Cam Cormier broke up several pass plays defensively, while Spruill and Dylan Cook had interceptions for Auburn.

Mites are set from 4:30 to 5:40 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, followed by the Squirts from 6:50 to 8 p.m. Peewees take the ice at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, with Bantams at 8 p.m. Families are asked to check the LAYHL website for further information.

Tourists may have headed home and summer leagues wrapped up, but that hasn't stopped local golf courses from producing holes-in-one in rapid-fire succession. Five aces were reported to the Sun Journal community sports desk within the last week.

Zach Turmenne achieved the feat at Poland Spring Country Club. Don Turmenne Sr. and Don Turmenne Jr. witnessed Zach's bid for family bragging rights on the 13th hole.

Stover lands ace at Prospect

AUBURN - Rodney Stover logged the third hole-in-one of his career Saturday at Prospect Hill Golf Course in the Wal-Mart touurnament. Stover used a wedge on the par-3, 123-yard 15th hole. Mark Beckelman, Mark Elie and John Good witnessed the ace.

Special Olympics equestrian meet Saturday

SKOWHEGAN - The 12th-annual Special Olympics Maine equestrian competition will take place Saturday, Sept. 26 at Skowhegan Fairgrounds. More than 100 athletes are expected to participate in the event and will represent over a dozen local stables. The athletes will compete in Showmanship, English and Western Equitation, Working Trails, Team Relay and Speed Barrels.

Fishing derby winner

Sabattus Pond Watershed Partnership announces the winners of its annual fishing derby. First place for bass at four pounds, seven ounces went to John Parker of Sabattus (pictured). Jerry Drouin of Auburn walked away with cash prizes and a trophy for a 4-pound, 15-ounce pike. Children's events were won by Brandon Perron, Connor Perron and Brendon Rac. The derby registration and weigh-in was at Martin's Point Boat Launch in Sabattus.

Local boys advance in competition

The Maine Amateur Hockey Association (MEAHA) hosted the State Championship Mini One-on-One competition at the Kennebec Ice Arena in Augusta. A total of 22 talented teams faced off in a shootout style competition. After 44 mini one-on-one games, the championship team was made up of two local boys. Jarod Lavalle of Sabattus, left, served as the "sniper-like" shooter, and Ridge Servidio of Lewiston proved to be solid in net as goalie. The boys played against some tough competition and were very pleased to be named the state champions for the 1999/1998 birth year division.

Maineiacs youth night a success

AUBURN - Auburn Youth Hockey celebrated its annual night Saturday with the Lewiston Maineiacs.

The Maineiacs won in overtime, with members of the Auburn Youth Hockey board of directors able to sit and enjoy the game after a busy day. Loads of preparation went into a successful night.

AUBURN - The Auburn Recreation Grade 7-8 varsity football team opened its season with an offensive explosion, downing Oxford Hills, 36-14.

Corey Henderson took the opening kick off 65 yards for a touchdown and scored another TD on a 55-yard pass from Jamison Rodrigues. John Boyd also had two touchdowns for Auburn.

Zach Bartsche and and Ian Milekis each had interceptions, while Brian Crane and Caleb Fecteau shut down the Oxford Hills rushing attack.

Winthrop Red Sox defend PTL title

AUBURN - The host Winthrop Red Sox rallied in amazing fashion, batttling back from down eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to knock out the Central Maine Green Wave, 12-11, and sweep their best-of-three Pine Tree League senior baseball championship series at Pettengill Park.

Josh Nichols' two-out walk-off single allowed the Sox to repeat. Prior to that, it was an often frustrating night for both teams, as they left a combined total 27 runners on base and made costly mistakes somewhat due to the lighting situation.
