WINTHROP - On Sunday, the Downeast Dodgers forced Winthrop to battle from behind twice before the Red Sox ended the No. 11 Dodgers' surprise run through the Pine Tree League baseball playoffs, 9-6.
Downeast jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Rusty Klobas singled in Harry Dwyer, who reached on a fielder's choice. Klobas then scored on a Winthrop error.
LEEDS - The AK Girls' Softball League recently completed its 20th anniversary season with a tournament at the Stinchfield complex. Teams from Leeds, Greene, Turner and Wayne participated in the event. An all-star game also was played at Tripp Middle School in Turner.
BETHEL - On a beautiful day that saw much less wind than Monday's first round, Mark Siewertsen and Jay Plourd combined for an even-par 72 to pair with their yesterday's score of 67 to win the Two-Man Championship at Sunday River at 139. The two players from Riverside were the only team under 140.
LEWISTON - The Andy-Valley Softball Umpires Association will hold its last meeting of the 2009 summer season Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Building.
The agenda this month will include: Overview of recreation softball in Lewiston and Auburn; softball fields in the area; possible changes in our by-laws; and election of officers for 2010. All umpires should attend and voice their opinion as well as vote for the upcoming slate of officers. Banquet questions and answers will be the final topic of discussion.
POLAND - Charlie Stone, 83, recorded the first hole-in-one of his golfing career recently at Fairlawn Golf Course. He used a 5-wood on the 123-yard, par-3 11th hole. Witnessing the feat were Pop Gilbert, Richard Sylvain and Julius Ceplikas.

AUBURN - Ryan Pleau and Dan Erickson led seven multiple hitters with three hits apiece, propelling Outlaws over Assassins, 15-3, in an Auburn Players League softball semifinal at Pettengill Park.
Pleau and Erickson each drove in two runs. Greg Brochu was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ernie May, Reggie Ewing, Ray Bernard and Newman each went 2-for-3 and knocked home a run, while Doyle delivered a base hit and a pair of RBIs.
Erickson, Brochu, May and Jeff Roy led the defense behind winning pitcher James Bixby.

LEWISTON - The Carlton Club/Club Texas softball team will be holding a pair of fundraisers this weekend to assist its trip to the ASA Nationals in Salem, Va., from Sept. 3-7.
The team will host a car wash Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Little Joe's, 740 Sabattus St. For more information, call Joe Walker at 333-1716.
POLAND - Pat Cailler, 85, scored a hole-in-one at Fairlawn Golf Course. Cailler aced the 123-yard 11th hole with a 7-wood. Norm Verville and Jack MacHardy witnessed the shot.

WINTHROP - The Winthrop Red Sox sent Fairfield packing from the Pine Tree League baseball playoffs Sunday morning with a 9-1 victory that was in doubt until the late innings.
Winthrop touched up Rockies starting pitcher Randy Brodeur early for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and runners at first and third base, Bob Cochran lined the first pitch he saw from Brodeur to right field for a two-run triple.
AUBURN - Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is pleased to announce that registration for the 2009 Field Hockey program started Monday, August 24. Registration may be completed at the front desk. Once again the program will take place at Auburn Middle School.
Three more holes-in-one highlighted recent action at local courses.
Sharon Buckley of Auburn sank an ace Thursday, August 20 on the 127-yard fourth hole at Martindale Country Club. She used a 5-iron. Ken Salvatore and Lance Walker witnessed the feat.
Steve Morin achieved his third career hole-in-one on No. 15 at Turner Highlands Country Club. All three of Morin's gems have been registered at different courses.
AUBURN - Harbor Landscape captured the recent USSSA Class E State men's softball tournament in Auburn.
Harbor Landscape started off the day with a 17-5 before losing 9-6 to Rising Sun. That set up a long day for Harbor, which needed seven consecutive victories to win the tourney.
Seven hours after the defeat, Harbor defeated Sun twoce, 17-2 and 11-8, to take top honors. Shawn Sabine earned the MVP Award for the day for Harbor Landscape. Brad Boyle was Co-MVP from Rising Sun. Danny's Landscape from Lewiston took third in the tournament.
