Minot native set for Babe Ruth World Series

JUPITER, Fla. - Former Minot resident Ronnie Healy, now living in Florida, will play in the Babe Ruth Baseball 14-year-old World Series in Appleton, Wis., beginning Thursday.
Since moving to Florida in 2003, Healy has become well-known in the Triple Crown and AAU Tournament Circuit for his catching and hitting abilities.

LEWISTON - Youth bowling league registration will be held at Sparetime Recreation from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, August 22 and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 29.
Cost is $17, and there is a weekly fee of $10 to bowl, which pays for lineage and puts money toward the prize fund at the end-of-the-year banquet.

NAPA, Outlaws advance

AUBURN - Second-seeded NAPA Auto Parts won its first playoff game in the Auburn Players League sofball playoffs, knocking out the No. 7 Marauders, 13-7, at Pettengill Park.
NAPA started slowly with cold bats and shaky defense and entered the fourth inning trailing 6-4. The offense batted around the order in that frame, scoring six runs on eight hits to take command. NAPA added three more insurance runs in the last two innings to seal the victory and advance in the winners' bracket.

Goodspeed gets ace

AUBURN - Perry Goodspeed picked up his first career hole-in-one at Fox Ridge Golf Club. Goodspeed used a sand wedge on the 113-yard 13th hole. Grant Sperry, Bill Martin and Nick Hogan witnessed the feat.

AUBURN - Portland Sea Dogs catcher Juan Apodaca will sign free autographs Monday from 4 to 5 p.m. at Republic Jewelry & Collectibles on Center Street.

The store is hosting the event as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. This the 11th free autograph session in Republic's history. Past celebrities have included Troy Brown, Dennis Eckersley, Dwight Evans and Bill Lee.

 

Pelletier's team shines at nationals

Members of Pelletier's Karate Academy in Lewiston shined in AAU national competitions this summer. Kayla Provencher, front left, competed in the 14-year-old advanced division at the AAU Karate National Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in June. She brought home a silver medal in long weapons and a bronze medal in short weapons. Provencher also competed in the AAU Jr. Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa, winning bronze medals in kata and weapons. Also competing in Iowa was Mykul Rojas, right, in the 12-year-old beginner/novice division.

AUBURN - Despite being out-hit nine to six, the Winthrop Red Sox still doubled up the Auburn White Sox, 10-5, Sunday in a Pine Tree League baseball battle at Pettengill Park.
Leading 4-3 going into the top of the seventh inning, Winthrop (13-3) took advantage of an error, a pair of walks and RBI singles from Eric Palleschi, Matt Richardson and Josh Nichols to plate six runs and take a commanding 10-3 lead.

BUCKFIELD - The Buckfield Recreation Commission is holding a softball tournament over the weekend of August 29 and 30 at Bessey Field and Buckfield High School. The entry fee is $250 per team with a limit of 12 teams. We will play by ASA rules, but no official rosters will be necessary. Winning team will receive champions' t-shirts. Outlaws win fifth straight

AUBURN - Outlaws concluded their regular season in Auburn Players League softball with their fifth straight victory, 7-3, over Team Argo at Pettengill Park.
Dan Erickson was 3-for-3 to lead the attack. Jason Halacy and Ray Bernard each went 2-for-2, with Jeff Roy, Keith Wright and Greg Brosher all 2-for-3. Wright knocked in a pair of runs.
Keith Wright made a putout at the plate with help from shortstop Ernie May to cut down a run as one of Argo's highlights. Outlaws second baseman Brosher took away a hit from Argo in the final inning to seal the win.

Beach volleyball tourney Wednesday

GRAY - A single-elimination high school girls' beach volleyball tournament is being held Wednesday, August 12, with teams and players from Biddeford, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Gorham, Greely, Lewiston, Thornton Academy and Yarmouth competing. Matches will be determined in a best-of-three set.

Twenty-four teams started the popular summer league in early June, and the tournament caps off an exciting and competitive season of volleyball in the sand.

Goldberg notches ace at Martindale

AUBURN - Gary Goldberg notched a hole-in-one Sunday on the fourth hole at Martindale Country Club. Goldberg used a 5-iron to cover the 173-yard distance. Ernie Ashton, Bob Blanchette and Dale Brown witnessed the feat.
Steve Jordan also registered an ace on the fourth hole in Friday's first round of the annual Member-Guest tournament.

Winthrop dismisses Downeast

WINTHROP - Jim Morris pitched five strong innings and Matt McCarthy and Dave Ricker Jr. delivered key hits to propel the Winthrop Red Sox past the Downeast Dodgers, 7-3, in Pine Tree League senior baseball.
McCarthy lined a two-run single with two out in the third inning to break a scoreless tie. Ricker followed suit with another two-out, two-run single in the seventh. Ricker also scored when the right fielder mishandled the ball and it rolled to the fence.

GREENE - Lucas Schandelmeier, who will a senior at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass., in the fall, received a spring varsity letter as a member of the school's baseball team. Cushing, located an hour west of Boston, hosts students from 25 states and 25 countries.
