WINSLOW — Fifty-six points have weighed down one side of the scoreboard at Gerry Poulin Memorial Field plenty of times over the years. Just never on the guests' side.
Leavitt Area High School clinched home field advantage throughout the Eastern Class B football playoffs and handed Winslow High School the most lopsided loss in school history, 56-0, in a Saturday shellacking that left the shoes feeling a smidgen tight on the home coaching staff's feet.
WALES — The first two possessions of the second half Saturday hinted at things to come.
Oak Hill's offense was stymied on its first try of the second half, and Livermore Falls marched downfield on its first chance and took the lead. It was a pattern that barely changed the rest of the way as the Andies rebounded from last week's loss for a 40-25 win over the Raiders.
LISBON — Even seven weeks into the season, Lisbon coach Dick Mynahan continues to be pleasantly surprised by several facets of his football team.
"Traip is a big, strong, physical team with everyone back," Mynahan said. "We were surprised that this turned out at halftime the way that it did, and part of that is the way we played. The kids played very well today."
AUGUSTA —Six weeks ago, the Monmouth Academy girls weren't just wondering if they could restore themselves to prominence in the Mountain Valley Conference, they weren't sure if they would even have a team.
On Saturday, they reminded the MVC what being a team in cross country's championship season is all about.
After having their six-year string of conference titles snapped by Lisbon last year, the Mustangs reclaimed the crown with an impressive collective effort from three senior and two freshman runners.
RUMFORD— Quarterback Cameron Kaubris threw touchdown pass and ran for another and the defense was strong when it had to be as Mountain Valley held firm Friday night with a 21-7 triumph over Falmouth in a football game at Chet Bulger field.
The Falcons beat Falmouth twice last year, 42-7 and 41-6 in a Campbell Conference semifinal game, but the Yachtsmen were well prepared this time.
WINTHROP — The Winthrop Ramblers discovered a new toy for their offense Friday night. Its arrival couldn't have come at a better time.
After relying on their running game through the first six weeks of the season, the Ramblers displayed a big-play passing attack. Junior quarterback Travis Luce tossed for a touchdown and kept two scoring drives alive with a pair of key completions to lead the Ramblers to a 26-14 win over the Jay Tigers in a pivotal Campbell Conference football game.
TOPSHAM — Edward Little High School was three yards away from getting back into Friday night's Pine Tree Conference football game at Mt. Ararat High School. It only felt like three miles.
Whatever momentum the Red Eddies carried at the end of the first half melted into the mitts of Drew Marshall and Dan Rinaldi, who stopped EL quarterback Teven Colon on fourth-and-goal at the 3 with six seconds to go.
BRUNSWICK — What was hoped to be an opportunity to tie Friday's game became just another moment of futility for the Oxford Hills football team.
A 75-yard kickoff return by Nate Dubois, put Oxford Hills at the 5-yard line. Oxford Hills offense went nowhere, however, and was stuffed on three run attempts and one pass play. It was a prime example of the Vikings offensive woes in a 42-8 Brunswick victory.
LEWISTON — As Cody Dussault's 23-yard field goal try slowly tumbled end-over-end toward the goal post, it appeared for a moment that Friday night's see-saw affair between Lewiston and Cony might reach a fitting, if nearly impossible, conclusion, with the pigskin teetering precariously for several seconds on the crossbar.
The ball did indeed make contact with the back of the crossbar, but the suspense lasted only another instant, as it tumbled over in Lewiston favor for a 29-26 overtime victory in a Pine Tree Conference nail-biter at Don Roux Field.
LEWISTON — The Lewiston Maineiacs aren't used to playing with an early lead, but they're not about to turn one away, either.
Alex Beaton netted his fifth goal of the season late in the first period, Billy Lacasse followed with his fifth 1:37 later and the Maineiacs overcame a stellar goaltending performance by Victoriaville keeper Kevin Poulin to earn a 4-2 victory over the Tigres, the team's sixth consecutive home victory to open the season.
SOUTH HIRAM - Kelsea Beisaw took a pass from Bri Farrington and scored the game-winning goal in the first half as Jay held off Sacopee Valley in the second half and slipped away with a 1-0 victory in a Western Maine Class C field hockey quarterfinal Friday.
The Tigers (11-4) will trave to North Yarmouth Academy on Wednesday in a 3 p.m. showdown in the semifinals.
Still, Jay made its one-goal lead hold up and barely outshot the Hawks, 12-10. Jay netminder Ashlee Quirrion made seven saves.
Telstar 5, Old Orchard 0
AUBURN - Justin Rosner scored off a throw-in early in the first overtime to give Brunswick a 2-1 victory over Edward Little in a KVAC boys' soccer game Friday.
Rosner took the throw-in, turned and booted the ball into the top right corner for the game-winner to deny the Red Eddies' bid to knock off the top-ranked Dragons (11-1-1).
Brunswick led 1-0 at halftime on Zack McMillan's goal, but Edward Little (7-3-3) tied it with 18:35 remaining. Jeremy Theriault crossed a free kick from 35 yards out to J.J. Jackson, who beat Brunswick goalie Peter Morrell.
There is more than a hint of envy in Jack Cosgrove's voice when he assesses the roster of the University of Maine's homecoming opponent, No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Richmond.
SALEM - Kaitie Buschmann netted a pair of first-half goals to propel Mt. Abram to a 3-1 victory over Jay/Livermore Falls in an MVC girls' soccer matchup Thursday.
Molly McCafferty also tallied for the Roadrunners (6-5-1) to complete the scoring. Mt. Abram carried a 2-1 advantage into the break and held tough in the second frame. Gillian Withee needed only one save to post the win.
Lexi Deering scored the lone goal for Jay/Livermore (7-4-2), while Beth Moore turned back six shots in net.
Georges Valley 2, Monmouth 1
LISBON — With a furious attack that took less than a minute, the Lisbon girls' soccer team had Hall-Dale staggering.
The Greyhounds opened the second half Thursday with back-to-back goals and almost instantly erased a deficit and put the Bulldogs on their heels. Lisbon couldn't deliver the knockout punch though, and Hall-Dale weathered the storm, regained its footing and survived with a 3-2 victory.
AUBURN — It took all of 11 seconds for Brunswick to flex its muscle against Edward Little on Thursday, but it took another 60 minutes before the Dragons could really feel comfortable against a tenacious Eddies squad that, at least for a half, was thinking upset.
Alison Watson netted a goal just 11 seconds after the opening whistle sounded and Hilary Champagne capped a flurry of offense in the game's final 20 minutes with three goals to lead the Dragons to a deceptively convincing 5-0 victory over Edward Little.
Ashley Beaulieu knew she just needed two goals to make history.
She also knew it wasn't going to be easy. The Lisbon senior forward was chasing down the single season scoring record set by Marcus Bubar last season. With 25 goals already, she seemed poised to set a new mark. To do so, however, she was going to have to score against a team that had already blanked her and her Greyhounds this season.
LEWISTON — Back on home ice for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Lewiston Maineiacs will put their perfect record at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on the line against a pair of tough divisional opponents as Victoriaville and Drummondville skate into town Friday and Saturday.
But the team will be helping to fight an even bigger battle this weekend, too, as it joins forces with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and area sponsors to raise money in the fight against Breast Cancer.
TURNER — It was an odd feeling for Matt Pellerin.
The 6-foot, 260-pound Leavitt lineman is used to being the strongest guy in the room. He can bench 350, squat 520, deadlift 495 and power clean 225 pounds five times. But when he competed in a meet at his gym last spring, he was reminded that he was still just a boy.
"It was fun, but it was tough because they didn't have any age classes," Pellerin said. "So I went up against all the big guys."
LEWISTON — Having a goal disallowed in the final three minutes of the first half Wednesday night was merely the frosting on an uncooked cake without sugar for Lewiston High School.
The Blue Devils were more frustrated by their failure to score against Mt. Ararat in the first 37 minutes, a segment they dominated and still concluded on the wrong end of the scoreboard.
DIXFIELD — Winthrop felt it had plenty to prove Wednesday in the Mountain Valley Conference field hockey championship game, and the Ramblers made good on their second chance against previously-unbeaten Telstar.
Senior Kelsey Ouellette lined up for a shot and let it fly on a penalty corner to score the lone goal midway through the second half as the Ramblers capped a strong defensive effort with a 1-0 victory over the Rebels at Harlow Park in Dixfield.
Oak Hill 2, MCI 1
WALES — Rebecca Belaire took a cross from Amanda Bloss with 29 minutes left in regulation to lift Oak Hill to a 2-1 victory over MCI in a KVAC girls' soccer tilt Wednesday.
Ashley Ketchin gave MCI (4-8-1) a 1-0 advantage early in the first frame. The Raiders (4-7-2) answered when Belaire took a cross from Marissa Caskin and fired it into the net with three minutes left before halftime.
DANGEROUS BUT WORTH THE RISK
Football isn't safe if you're walking around with a separated shoulder. But then again, neither is sleeping, if you happen to move the wrong way in the night.
And so Cam Kaubris has decided to maximize those waking hours and return to the football field. Kaubris put on the pads for reigning Class B champion Mountain Valley last Saturday night, throwing one pass and making one tackle.
We were hoping for a showdown weekend. Instead, we got a separation weekend.
Last Friday night was advertised as the night that would make those sweltering, sunburned, September Saturday afternoons worthwhile. It was supposed to debit those 74-6 and 75-0 shellackings from the memory bank.
It was an evening where you could flip a coin, jump in the car and not go wrong. Or least bellyache about how many crappy games you've suffered through, bribe the boss two weeks in advance and not go wrong.
Just kiddin', Randy.
Cony (3-3) at Lewiston (4-2)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Devils remain in the running for a first-round home playoff game. But they'd better not fall asleep on the Rams, who have learned how to win the close ones this year.
Edward Little (1-5) at Mt. Ararat (1-5)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Might sound crazy, but the winner is alive and well in pursuit of a postseason berth.
Oxford Hills (1-5) at Brunswick (5-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
