Nov 17, 2009 6:31 am
BOSTON (AP) — Matt Moulson scored two goals and Dwayne Roloson stopped 28 shots to lead the New York Islanders to a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday night.

John Tavares also scored to make it 3-1 — a goal that was originally credited as Moulson's third of the game before being corrected on review — and Trent Hunter added an empty-netter with 49 seconds left.

Tuukka Rask made 17 saves and Daniel Paille scored for Boston, which killed off all five penalties and have not allowed a goal in 22 consecutive power plays.

Belichick: No regrets over gamble

Nov 17, 2009 5:30 am

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Bill Belichick defended his decision to go for it on fourth down as criticism mounted Monday of the call that led to the New England Patriots stunning loss.

The coach hailed as one of the NFL's best was a target of columnists, talk radio callers and two of his former players. Why, they all wondered, did he gamble with a six-point lead and just over two minutes to go against the Indianapolis Colts?

The gamble failed and the Patriots lost 35-34 after leading by 17 points in the fourth quarter Sunday night.

Kard-charging style earns Keselowski few supporters

Nov 17, 2009 4:41 am
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Brad Keselowski's crew chief was headed to the pre-race driver meeting when Juan Pablo Montoya cut him off at the door.

"The next two weeks, you better bring your worst cars," Montoya told Roy McCauley.

"Why's that?" McCauley asked.

"Because they are going to get wrecked," Montoya warned. "Somebody is going to wreck him, if Denny Hamlin doesn't do it first."

The banter was friendly, and Montoya smiled as he delivered the message. But he certainly wasn't joking.

"I know I have to win. That's my priority now," Wie said that day. "They all expect me to do better and work harder."

Nov 17, 2009 4:14 am

Coghlan edged Philadelphia Phillies pitcher J.A. Happ, receiving 17 first-place votes and 105 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Happ, the only player picked on all 32 ballots, had 10 first-place votes and 94 points.

"It's very exciting," Coghlan said. "I couldn't have written it better."

Colts know how to deal with perfection

Nov 17, 2009 3:58 am

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Now that Indianapolis has won its annual November showdown with New England, players can embark on their next traditional quest.

Chasing perfection.

For the third time in five years, the Colts are 9-0 and need to pull out those rehearsed lines.

"It is a huge win," three-time MVP Peyton Manning said after rallying the Colts for a 35-34 victory Sunday night. "The main reason is it's an AFC team. Teams in our division are winning. That's what we are trying to do, stay ahead of those teams."

Hurricanes stop winless streak

Nov 16, 2009 4:40 am

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jussi Jokinen and Michael Leighton helped Carolina end its winless streak at 14 games, leading the Hurricanes to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday.

The Hurricanes' second shooter in the tiebreaker, Jokinen went to his backhand and lofted the puck over Niklas Backstrom's glove. Leighton then stopped Marek Zidlicky on the Wild's final chance to give the Hurricanes their first win since Oct. 9.

Bengals cap sweep of Steelers

Nov 16, 2009 4:25 am

PITTSBURGH — Finally after 40 years of being pushed around and dominated by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals refused to be bullied any more.

The Bengals beat the Steelers at their own game in their own stadium, relying on a defense that smothered Ben Roethlisberger and the Super Bowl champions by holding them to four field goals, and using one big special teams play for an 18-12 victory Sunday that put them in control of the AFC North.

Rash of injuries strikes NFL in Week 10

Nov 16, 2009 4:19 am

Quarterback Kyle Orton sat out the second half of the Denver Broncos' 27-17 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday with an injured left ankle and was unsure whether he'll be able to play next week.

Orton came up hobbling after being tackled on a third-down scramble right before halftime. He was on the sideline during the second half, his ankle heavily taped.

"I was hoping to come back out, and I just wasn't able to," said Orton, who was 11 for 18 for 193 yards and two long touchdown passes to Brandon Marshall.

TCU stuck at No. 4 despite big win

Nov 16, 2009 4:14 am

NEW YORK (AP) — TCU's big victory wasn't enough for the Horned Frogs to make a move up the BCS standings.

TCU (10-0) on Sunday remained behind Florida, Alabama and Texas in the race to the national title game.

The Horned Frogs defeated Utah 55-28 on Saturday night in what figured to be the most difficult game left on their schedule. But they remained stuck in fourth place in Bowl Championship Series standings.

Woods earns Masters crown Down Under

Nov 16, 2009 3:47 am

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Tiger Woods gave the record crowds at the Australian Masters everything they could have wanted with his victory Sunday, except a definitive answer when he would return.

"I promise it won't be as long," Woods said to yet another warm ovation.

Woods took the lead for good with a 7-iron to within four feet for birdie on the fifth hole, and he hardly missed a shot the rest of the way for a 4-under 68 and a two-shot win over Australia's Greg Chalmers.

Nov 16, 2009 3:44 am
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Brad Keselowski met with top NASCAR officials for about 20 minutes before Sunday's race at Phoenix International Raceway, where the young driver had yet another on-track run-in with Denny Hamlin.

Keselowski was summoned to a closed-door meeting in the NASCAR truck with president Mike Helton, vice president of competition Robin Pemberton and Nationwide Series director Joe Balash to discuss growing tension among rival drivers about Keselowski's aggressive nature.

NASCAR chairman Brian France entered the truck mid-meeting.

Pacquiao shows greatness in small package

Nov 16, 2009 3:41 am

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Manny Pacquiao had a hat perched jauntily on his head, a bandage wrapped neatly around his right ear. His real work done for the night, he was heading down the Las Vegas Strip to sing a few songs with his band.

Everyone was invited, but there was a catch.

"Of course, you have to buy tickets for the concert," Pacquiao said.

Nov 16, 2009 12:00 am
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson rebounded from a rare bad race with a dominating victory at Phoenix International Raceway that pushed him to the edge of a NASCAR record fourth consecutive championship.

Johnson led 238 laps Sunday to win for the fourth time in the last five races at Phoenix. It was his seventh victory of the season, and fourth since the start of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Colts take advantage of Patriots' gamble, earn 35-34 win

Nov 16, 2009 12:00 am
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A stunning gamble by Bill Belichick set up a stunning win for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

After the New England Patriots were stopped short on fourth down deep in their own territory, Manning took advantage by throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds left that rallied the unbeaten Colts to a 35-34 win Sunday night.

Manning's toss to Reggie Wayne completed the Colts' comeback from a 17-point deficit. A decision by the Patriots coach put them in position for their 18th straight regular-season win.

BC takes down Virginia

Nov 15, 2009 5:12 am
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Dave Shinskie admitted to being somewhat rattled, if only for a moment, after an interception he threw erased Boston College's lead against Virginia.

Then he bounced back the way he knew he needed to, leading the Eagles on a 70-yard drive that ended with his 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down in their 14-10 victory on Saturday.

"That's what good quarterbacks do," the 25-year-old freshman said. "If you make a mistake, you've got to put it behind you and come back and play the next down."

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Tim Tebow tied the Southeastern Conference touchdown record and No. 1 Florida gained its first perfect league season in 13 years with a 24-14 victory over South Carolina on Saturday.

The Gators (10-0, 8-0) remained on track for a third national title in four years. They again called on their SEC-leading defense to save things against former coach Steve Spurrier.

Nov 15, 2009 4:14 am
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Things are back to normal among the NFL's elite.

Peyton Manning is healthy, Tom Brady is throwing touchdown passes, the Indianapolis Colts are unbeaten and the New England Patriots lead the AFC East.

It's the perfect stage for the next chapter in the decade's best rivalry, Sunday night in Indianapolis.

"It's a fun game to play and, obviously, you have playoff implications and playoff hype," Colts linebacker Gary Brackett said.

Huddle Up: Take time to savor Colts vs. Pats

Nov 15, 2009 2:24 am

When the NFL released the 2009 schedule back in April, I remember hearing people complain that the Patriots had to play the Colts again this year.

In the words of the noted philosopher Cleveland Brown, that's just crazy.

Some folks just don't know how good they have it. Sure, the Colts are good, so good that recently they've almost completely turned the tables on New England's initial dominance of the rivalry. And, yeah, Peyton Manning's pre-snap theatrics can be a bit annoying to watch, like Nomar Garciaparra in the batter's box.

Hawks swoop down on Celtics

Nov 14, 2009 2:05 am
BOSTON (AP) — Joe Johnson scored 24 points, Jamal Crawford had 18 and the Atlanta Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 97-86 win over the Boston Celtics on Friday night.

Last week, Phoenix gave Boston (8-2) its first loss of the season after a 7-0 start.

Tiger thinking his way around a short course

Nov 14, 2009 2:00 am

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Tiger Woods had a stiff breeze at his back as he stood on the 13th tee, his hand resting on the cover of his driver as he contemplated how to navigate the 354 yards to the green.

With his brawn, Woods could hit driver close to the green, maybe onto the putting surface, for an easy birdie.

He chose to use his brain.

Koppen questionable for Patriots

Nov 14, 2009 1:54 am
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Starting center Dan Koppen is one of 10 New England Patriots listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the undefeated Indianapolis Colts.

Koppen hurt his knee during last Sunday's win over Miami.

There was some good news for the Patriots on Friday. Tackle Matt Light, running back Sammy Morris and rookie wide receiver Julian Edelman all practiced for the first time in weeks. Light and Morris are recovering from knee injuries and Edelman from a broken arm.

Mass. gov.: No quid pro quo in Kraft donations

Nov 14, 2009 1:51 am
BOSTON (AP) — The governor of Massachusetts said Friday there is no connection between big donations to him and the Democratic Party from the family that owns the New England Patriots and the state's support for development across the road from Gillette Stadium.

Gov. Deval Patrick said Patriots owner Robert Kraft had asked him about using $9 million in federal stimulus money on a footbridge to an industrial site he owns across Route 1 from the stadium. Patrick said the state supports it because the infrastructure will spur development and job creation.

Truex, Kurt Busch take top 2 spots at PIR

Nov 14, 2009 1:46 am
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. bounced back from a midweek NASCAR penalty with a pole-winning run at Phoenix International Raceway.

Truex turned a lap of 135.120 mph Friday to qualify first in his No. 1 Chevrolet. It was a huge lift for his team, which failed post-race inspection last week at Texas to draw a 50-point penalty. Crew chief Kevin Manion also was fined $50,000.

"That's how you can sum up our season," Truex shrugged.
