Celebrating with style

When people find out that Frank and Connie Ayotte live on South Main Street in Auburn, they quickly ask them if they know the people who decorate their lawn for every holiday.

“We have to admit, ‘Oh, that’s us!'” Frank says with a laugh. “I’m known as the patriotic one.”

It all started about 15 years ago when the former Air Force medical technologist decorated for the major holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter and the Fourth of July. Five years ago, he added smaller holidays: St. Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Flag Day (their wedding anniversary).

The Fourth of July is one of their favorites.

“It’s a time for bringing families together. And it symbolizes our freedom, our history and our country,” says Frank.

“And,” adds Connie, “we should appreciate the country we live in and not take it for granted.”

Every year, Frank tries to be a little different. He buys decorations year-round (Christmastime is the best for finding red, white and blue lights, he says) and rarely makes a trip to the store without buying something.

“If they sold it, I’d buy it. You can never have too many lights.”

They enjoy the decorating, but when it comes down to it, Frank and Connie do it for the people. They like to see cars full of families stop and look.

“We like to make people happy,” Frank says.
