Center offers classes for caregivers


LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a new three-part Lunch and Learn Series for Cancer Caregivers.

Sessions will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Mondays, April 5, May 3 and June 7, at 12 High St. in conference room D. The sessions are free, lunch will be provided and space is limited to eight participants.

The series is designed to provide the caregiver with tools to care for themselves as well as their loved one while connecting with other caregivers in a group setting. Sessions are as follows:

April 5: The art of caregiving 101. Guest presenter Jeff Galipeau, whose wife was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009, will share his experience and lessons learned along the way.

May 3: Communicating difficult feelings, needs and concerns. Series facilitator Emily Ecker, LSCW, will discuss ways to navigate challenging conversations between cancer patient and caregiver.

June 6: Techniques to be an effective advocate. Dorn McMahon, LMSW-CC, will provide ways to enhance the ability to advocate for a loved one, including how to work effectively work through bureaucratic systems.
