Chamber concert at UMF

FARMINGTON – Members of the Maine Mountain Chamber Music will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 29, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine campus.

Directed by Yuri Funahashi and Laurie Kennedy, Maine Mountain Chamber Music continues its tradition of inviting in outstanding, nationally recognized musicians to join Yuri and Laurie in producing chamber music concerts.

This concert’s guests are Mark Votapek, cello, who is making his fourth appearance in Farmington, and Mark Steinberg, violin. Steinberg has performed with many of the worlds leading symphony orchestras, and is first violinist of the Brentano Quartet.

The program consists of a viola & piano sonata by Schumman, a piano quartet by Brahms, and another work for piano quartet, “The King of the Sun,” by Stephen Hartke

First on the program is “Pictures from Fairy Land” for Viola and Piano, one of the last chamber works of Robert Schumann.

Written in 1851, several years before his final confinement in a mental institution, these pieces give the flavor of fantasy. Kartke’s “King of the Sun” was partly inspired by paintings by the Spanish painter Juan Miro.

Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 62 and olders, free for children under 16 and UMF students with identification.

There will be no advance ticket sales. For more information, call 645-2157.
