GREENWOOD — Charles L. Johnson Sr., 77, of Greenwood, died Friday, Oct. 17, at his home in Greenwood surrounded by his loving family.

Charles was born on April 20, 1937, in Bryant Pond, a son of, Oscar and Julia (Briggs) Johnson. He attended local schools, graduating from Woodstock High School, and he later served his country after enlisting in the U.S. Navy.

He married Susan Smith in Bryant Pond. They had four children together, Charles, Leslie, Frederick and Christopher.

In 1972, he married Wanda Brown in Bryant Pond. They made their home in Greenwood and had one child, Julia. Charles worked at Stowells Mill as a logger, Cianbro and Bancroft corporations.

Charles enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything. He loved going to his father, Edgar’s camp on Indian Pond, where the entire family would gather. He went on many camping trips with family and friends, his favorites were to Bailey Island. He passed on his love of working to his children, who continue to carry on the tradition. He never missed a NASCAR race and was an avid card player, spending many afternoons playing cribbage on his porch with family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda of Greenwood; children, Charles L. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Peru, Frederick C. Johnson and his wife, Shelley, of Bryant Pond, Christopher Johnson and his wife, Dawn, of Bryant Pond, Leslie A. Baumgartel and her husband, Rich, of Bryant Pond and Julia Williamson and her husband, Gary, of Bryant Pond; sisters, Gloria Robinson and her husband, Robbie, of Groton, Conn., Marcia Monk and her husband, Percy, of Bethel; brothers, Jeffery Johnson and wife, Doreen, of Greenwood and James Johnson and wife, Katherine, of Greenwood; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by siblings, Shirley Seams, Carla Martin and Jerry Johnson; and parents Oscar and Evelyn (Diddy) Johnson and Edgar and Julia Morgan.
