SOUTH PARIS — Charles “Phil” Taylor, age 82 of Newry, passed away Sunday on his birthday, Sunday, Sept. 17, at Market Square health Care.
Phil was born in Lewiston on September 17, 1935, a son of Charles J. and Mary (Casey) Taylor.
A graduate of Edward Little High School in 1953, Phil then graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a Bachelor’s Degree in French. He then graduated from the University of Southern Maine, with a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology.
He taught Foreign Languages at Gould Academy, and for many years at Telstar High School. Phil was also a dedicated law enforcement officer working as a deputy sheriff for the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department, and as a police officer with Rumford and Bethel Police Departments.
Phil faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army. As an M.P., Phil served in Berlin Germany during the Korean War. He then went on as an officer attaining the rank of Major and worked in Army Intelligence. In 1968 and 1969, Phil served a tour of duty in Vietnam.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Snows in Bethel.
He married Suzanne Maguire on September 2, 1957.
Phil is predeceased by a brother, Ralph, and a sister, Jean Crosskill.
Surviving are his wife of Newry; his son, Jack and his wife, Laura of Newry; his daughter, Mary Merrill and her husband, Jim of West Bethel; seven grandchildren; and his sister in law, Lee Hearn and her husband, Robert of Auburn. Condolences can be expressed at www.chandlerfunerals.com.
