AUBURN — Charles R. Niskanen Sr., 87, of Auburn, died Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Androscoggin Hospice House.
He was born in Turner on Nov. 5, 1927, a son of Marsha Hopkins. He attended schools in Auburn, leaving to go into the U.S. Army; he served with the armored tank division during World War II. He worked throughout New England as a clerk/assistant manager for A & P Supermarkets.
Charles had his private pilot’s license. He loved airplanes, air shows and model planes. He enjoyed gardening and good times at camp. He was a boating enthusiast, owning several boats.
He married Audrey Bartlett on March 21, 1953, and they enjoyed 61 years together.
Charles is survived by his wife of Auburn; two sons, Charles Jr. of Auburn and Mark and his wife, Debbie, of Mechanic Falls; three grandchildren, Brent Niskanen, Bryan Niskanen and Melanie Niskanen and her companion, Roy Jenkins; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb and Kaylee Niskanen and Brody Jenkins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Marchus; and two sisters, Ruth Poole and Julia Martella-Rouleau.
