Chesterville driver receives summons after crash

FARMINGTON — A  Chesterville man received a summons on a charge of failing to stop at a stop sign Monday after an accident at Perham and High streets.

Russell Kaniuka, 87, was driving south on High Street toward the University of Maine at Farmington at 9:24 a.m. and attempted to cross the intersection. According to witnesses, he did not stop for a vehicle coming down Perham Street into town, Farmington police officer Ryan Rosie said.

A Sirois Driving Academy vehicle, a Dodge Stratus, driven by a juvenile student crashed into the left front quarter of Kanuika’s 2003 Subaru Legacy, Rosie said.  The crash spun the Subaru around and it ended up on a lawn.

Rosie called for NorthStar Ambulance to check Kaniuka. He was not transported to the hospital.

The student driver had the right of way, Rosie said. The driver was accompanied by instructor Michael Sirois. Neither was injured.

Both cars were towed from the scene.
