RUMFORD — The Chisholm Ski Club is hoping to expand its volunteer group to provide full coverage for the U.S. Cross Country Championships scheduled for January 2, 4, 6 and 8. The club is making early preparations to be prepared for the competition. More than 450 competitors from all over the U.S. and Canada, including 2010 Winter Olympic and Para-Olympic racers, will come to the River Valley to compete at Black Mountain of Maine.
Applications can be filled out and returned on line or downloaded and mailed in by going to www.chisholmskiclub.org or www.skiblackmountain.org. Interested volunteers should submit an application by June 10. The ability to ski is not necessary. Chummy Broomhall, although he is now 90, will usually keep an eye on everything, provide advice and share stories.
The club is also busy preparing the John Roderick Trails and the Chummy Broomhall Stadium to ensure a well run, challenging and safe racing experience for all the competitors. Every year, Broomhall provides a list of projects that continue to improve the site. Volunteers and local business support and proceeds from last year’s races make it happen.
For more information, call Broomhall at 364-8315, Don Hopkins at 364-2903 or Paul Jones at 562-7172.
