CUMBERLAND — Cindy Bullens has announced her candidacy as a Democrat for the state Senate District 11 seat, after the withdrawal of Charles “Bill” Kenney. District 11 includes Cumberland, Chebegue Island, Long Island, Falmouth, Gray, Yarmouth and North Yarmouth.

Bullens has lifelong ties to Maine. She spent her childhood summers in Kennebunkport and Chebeague Island, and as an adult in North Haven. She and her family have lived in Maine for 19 years.

A twice Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, Bullens is a small business owner who manages two music companies based in Maine. She is also the co-founder and a director, with Dan Crewe, of the Jessie D. Bullens-Crewe Foundation and the Jessie B-C Fund, named after her 11-year-old daughter, who died in 1996 of complications during treatment for Hodgkin’s disease.

Bullens is a nationally certified fitness trainer, and works part time at the Casco Bay YMCA in Freeport. She is also an advocate for youth suffering with substance abuse, and was the keynote speaker for Day One’s annual fundraiser in 2006.
