Police probe reports of fake $100 bills

LEWISTON — Police are investigating three recent instances of customers trying to pass counterfeit $100 bills at local variety stores and a gas station.

Since Saturday, customers have tried to use the bogus bills at downtown stores on Pine and Lisbon streets and one on outer Lisbon Street.

A local detective is investigating the claims. If confirmed, the cases likely would be turned over to the Secret Service, police said.
