BOWDOIN — A 2-year-old Wales boy died Saturday night at a Lewiston hospital after being hit by an SUV while visiting relatives in Bowdoin.
Jordan L'Italien, 2, broke free from a relative and ran into the road after a ball Saturday evening and was hit by a 2001 Subaru Forrester driven by Stephen Lappanen, 37, of 413 Main St. No. 12, Lewiston.
According to information released Sunday by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred just minutes before 8 p.m. Saturday in front of a home at 1020 Main St. in Bowdoin. Rescue crews from Bowdoin, Lisbon and Sagadahoc County all responded to the scene.
The boy was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
L'Italien was under adult supervision, according to the report, but had broken free of a relative who was trying to stop him from running into the street after a ball that had bounced across the road.
The case remained under investigation as of Sunday night by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office with assistance from crash reconstruction experts from the Brunswick Police Department and the Maine State Police.

I remember so well when my son was two years old. We were playing in the front yard, and all of a sudden he took off for the road just as a car was rounding the corner. I reach him in time, however, I was so shocked as to how quickly he moved. This is so sad. My thoughts are with the family and the driver of the car.

Having my house so close to the road with traffic from out of town "passing through" at higher than allowed speeds, this is always a concern for me. Remember folks, if you see a ball enter the roadway, there WILL be a child following it! That's how you must think!
This was a tragic accident for sure...... :(
