Fire damages manufacturing plant in Auburn

AUBURN — A fire at Auburn Manufacturing Inc. on First Flight Drive Monday morning traveled through a duct system and spread to the building's roof, forcing the plant to stop manufacturing for the day, Auburn fire Chief Richard McFadden said.

Firefighters responded to the fire at about 8:15 a.m., McFadden said. The fire began in an oven used to produce heat-treated fabric. The fire moved through a series of exhaust ducts but didn't damage most of the equipment, Skip Mattox, Auburn Manufacturing's vice president of production, said.

Non-manufacturing office staff were able to continue working after the fire was put out, McFadden said. "They didn't have to close their whole operation down."

No one was injured in the blaze, and evacuation procedures went according to plan, Mattox said. "They did everything the right way, so we're very pleased with that."

While company officials spent Monday inspecting the machinery and trying to pinpoint the exact reason the oven caught fire, they planned to resume production as usual by Tuesday, Mattox said.
