Low confirmed as Auburn deputy fire chief

AUBURN — Geoff Low, 40, of Dixfield, was confirmed as Auburn’s deputy fire chief recently.

Low has 24 years of fire service experience and has served for more than 10 years with the Auburn Fire Department, since April 2010 as acting chief. Low has an associate degree in fire science and is a licensed paramedic.

“I am honored to be chosen as Auburn’s deputy chief. The Auburn Fire Department consists of highly qualified and dedicated personnel, who are as committed as I am to making the city of Auburn one of Maine’s safest communities to live, work and play in,” Low said in a prepared statement.

Auburn City Manager Glenn Aho said, “Low’s confirmation of deputy chief comes at a critical time for the city and the Fire Department as we move forward to work with the department members to chart our future. We need a leader who will foster the growth and success of the department within our means. We have a talented department, and I am confident Geoff will do everything possible to further develop that talent so that we provide superior services at an affordable cost.”

Auburn Fire Department is a 60-member department, with three staffed stations, and annually responds to nearly 4,000 fire, rescue and emergency medical calls.

The city manager is the issue

I'd be more concerned that the city manager has done away with the rescue service and has taken almost a year to replace Chief Werts. Looks like he's trying to move the FD backwards instead of forward.

No Fire Chief

Most of you probably don't know, the city of Auburn doesn't have a Fire Chief anymore, that spot has been vacant since the last chief retired. So Deputy Chief Lowe is running the department.

16 year olds have no business

16 year olds have no business fighting fires in a large city ! I wonder why nobody that wasraised or lives in Auburn was not chosen?? And Id have to agree he is most likely being payed to much and it is one position that could be done away with which may in the end save a Firefighters job,and I for one rather see a Firefighters job saved !

Wow. Honestly, are you

Wow. Honestly, are you people that dense? The 16-year-old doesn't fight the fire - they can't do that until they are 18 - they LEARN the skills necessary so that when they are adults (18), when they have adequate training, they are able to put the skills they LEARNED to good, SAFE use. Maybe no one who was raised or lives in Auburn was qualified for the job? Just sayin'. And...is the Deputy Fire Chief NOT a firefighter any more? Jeeeshhh!! Quit hatin' on the Fire Department people! Some day you may need them!!

What fire department accepts

What fire department accepts 16 year olds? I think his resume has been padded. Why isn't his salary stated. Bet it's more than the average taxpayer. Why does the city need and DEPUTY Fire Chief? How busy can the Fire Chief be to necessitate a deputy? More wasted money.

Every fire department accepts

Every fire department accepts 16 year olds. They are called Junior Firefighters and they learn the skills necessary to save your ass when your building goes up in flames.
