AUBURN — An Auburn man remained in the Androscoggin County Jail Sunday night after holding police at bay during a Saturday standoff that lasted more than seven hours.
A dispatcher at the jail reported that Ronald Mark Briggs, 44, of 44 Fourth St., Auburn, remained in jail on $7,560 bail on charges of criminal trespass, terrorizing and creating a police standoff.
Armed with a rifle, Briggs locked himself in his ex-girlfriend's home on Pine Street in Auburn and threatened to fire on officers. No one was injured, and police said Briggs was alone in the apartment.
Auburn police arrived at the scene shortly after 2:30 p.m. and evacuated seven apartment buildings within the man's shooting range. Police closed several nearby streets, including parts of Goff, Oak and Willow streets. In all, 50 people were evacuated during the standoff.
Authorities also reported that Briggs suffers from bipolar disorder and may have stopped taking his medication.
After surrendering peacefully to police at about 10 p.m., Briggs was transported Saturday night to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center for an evaluation. He was later taken to the Androscoggin County Jail.
