AUBURN — A local man accidentally shot and injured a friend with a .32 caliber handgun at his home Tuesday night.
Joshua Becvar, 22, was reassembling the firearm after cleaning it at his residence on Pleasant Street when the gun fired, police Lt. Scott Watkins said.
The bullet struck Joshua Bachelder, 22, of Readfield, in his left arm, Watkins said. Bachelder was taken in a private vehicle to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where emergency room personnel removed the bullet, Watkins said. Bachelder was not at the hospital as of 9:30 p.m., a CMMC nursing supervisor said.
Police determined that the incident was an accident after speaking to Becvar at home and to Bachelder in the hospital, Watkins said. The case will be referred to the District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether to file charges related to the incident, he said.

thanks
thanks for clearing that up Jan, that was the first question I had too, but I've learned to take LSJ reporting with a grain of salt, I wish Josh a speedy recovery.

He wasn't cleaning a loaded gun, he was loading a cleaned gun. It was an accident, plain and simple.

but nonetheless caused by irresponsible behavior with a firearm. I've been a gun owner for a LONG time. Any weapon I own, whether it is loaded or unloaded, is kept pointed in a safe direction, in a holster, or in my safe and does not get pointed at ANYTHING unless I am prepared to fire at it. Had this gentlemen pointed the muzzle of the weapon in a safe direction while loading it, there would have been no accident. Accident... OK... I will buy that. He didn't intentionally shoot the guy but the accident occured as a result of irresponsible behavior.

Since when did cleaning a gun involve having it loaded? This is the type of irresponsibility that gives gun owners a bad name!
