College to offer series for nonprofit groups

AUBURN – The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer a series of workshops for nonprofit organizations beginning on Wednesday, April 12. The cost of each is $65.

The first workshop is “Strategic Planning Strategic Planning” (CCS 075-01), which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon April 12.

Strategy prepares an organization to deal with an uncertain future. The strategic choices a nonprofit organization makes, explicitly or implicitly, determine how it positions itself in the marketplace and how it organizes its delivery of services to meet consumer demand. The facilitator will be Christos Gianopoulos.

Gianopoulos will also facilitate “Grant-writing” (CCS 078-01) from 9 a.m. to noon April 19. The workshop will take participants from initial contact with a funding source to final submission of a proposal, as well as follow-up.

The program will be particularly helpful to those organizations that wish to strengthen their ability to attract new sources of funding and become more self-sustaining.

“Developing and Managing Volunteers” (CCS 084-01) will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 26. Volunteers are the life-blood of any organization. The interactive workshop will show participants how to enhance or build a volunteer program, from recruitment and training to placement and supervision. The facilitator will be Jerry DeWitt.

The series will conclude on May 17 with “Board Development” (CCS 079-01) from 9 a.m. to noon, facilitated by Christos Gianopoulos. A vital aspect of an organization’s reputation for effectiveness is the way the board of directors governs the organization, sets policy and stands up for the value of the services provided by the staff.

Participants will learn about the vital roles that the board and board members play and how board participation makes a difference in the success of nonprofit organizations.
