PARIS – For the first time since Central Maine Community College’s Western Maine campus opened, this fall it will offer a political science class. “Introduction to American Politics” will introduce students to the fundamentals of American politics.

They will study and analyze the different aspects of United States politics, including political culture, the founding period, the constitution, the federal system, public opinion and the mass media, campaigns and elections, political parties, interest groups, Congress, the presidency, the bureaucracy, the judiciary, public policies, civil liberties, civil rights and international and defense policies.

In addition, students will study and analyze how power operates as a part of political culture, various institutions and important actors in American politics.

“With the current political climate and the fact that so many people are interested in national politics, we believe this is the perfect time to offer ‘Introduction to American Politics’ here in Western Maine,” said Barbara Livingston of Central Maine Community College’s South Paris campus.

“Introduction to American Politics” (POS 150-31; $312 plus books) is a three-credit course that will run from 5:30 to 8:25 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 6 through Dec. 20. It is open to the public as well as those enrolled in a CMCC degree program.
