College roundup: UMF downs Thomas in lacrosse

FARMINGTON — Amie Daniels tallied five goals and made two assists and Jess Allen chipped in four goals as the University of Maine at Farmington women’s lacrosse team scored a 15-12 victory over Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference East Division action Tuesday.

Jessie LaCasse bagged a hat trick for Farmington (3-3) with Corinne Vierkant contributing a goal and two helpers and Alyssa Neptune and Anna Rerrick each scored a goal.

Kiley Jolicoeur led all goal scorers with seven tallies for Thomas (2-6) with Ceara Dibiase adding three goals and Meg Denby two goals and an assist.

Jolicoeur netted a pair of goals in a four-goal stretch for the Terriers to give the visitors a 6-4 lead with 2:48 left in the first half, but Allen and Rerrick each cashed in free-position shots to tie the game at 6-6 at the break..

Daniels scored a pair of unassisted goals and fed Allen for a score over the first 3:28 of the second half to give Farmington a 9-6 advantage. The lead ballooned to 15-10 with 4:41 remaining in the contest as the Beavers went on to the 15-12 victory.

Andrea Knox and Ashley Wentworth shared netminding duties for UMF. Knox and Wentworth each made four saves as the Beavers outshot the Terriers 40-23.

Teshia Cates stopped 11 shots for Thomas.

Women’s softball

Colby sweeps UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine –Colby College swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine at Farmington 8-2, 5-3 in non-conference softball action this afternoon at Prescott Field.

In the opener, Colby (6-13) put together a 7-0 command over the first four innings en route to the 8-2 win.

Barbara Santos powered the Mules with a two-run home run and a single, while Christine Gillespie doubled and drove in two runs and Lizzi Fort collected three singles.

Santos’ dinger started the scoring for Colby in the first with the Mules parlaying three hits and three errors for three runs in the second and a 5-0 lead. A Gillespie RBI groundout and a Alyssa Lepore run-scoring double pushed the advantage to 7-0 in the fourth

Casandra Dyer singled three times with an RBI and Kaitlyn Bartlett singled, doubled and plated a run for Farmington (4-6).

Brittany Tasi went the distance for the win, scattering nine hits with four strikeouts.

Jess Timmreck tossed four innings in the loss for the Beavers with one strikeout and 10 hits allowed.

In the nightcap, Santos smacked three singles and drove in a run as the Mules built a 5-0 lead and held on for the 5-3 win.

Following Santos, Annie Wilson singled and doubled. Colby took advantage of three Farmington miscues to tally five runs over the third and fourth frames.

After a Sam Morency RBI single for the Beavers in the fourth, Bartlett clubbed a two-run blast in the sixth to trim the lead to 5-3,but Lepore, on in relief, was able to recover to close out the game for Lauren Becker.

McKell Barnes singled and doubled in the second contest.

Whitney Page hurled a complete game for Farmington with zero walks and four strikeouts.

Becker allowed three hits with two walks and a strikeout over six innings in the win.
