FARMINGTON — Kaitlyn Bartlett earned her first collegiate win the first game and clubbed four doubles over the twinbill as the University of Maine at Farmington softball team downed the University of Maine at Presque Isle 5-2 and 10-7 in non-conference action at Prescott Field.
The Beavers evened their record at 4-4 while the Owls dropped to 6-18.
In the opener, Bartlett walked two, struck out two and allowed four hits over six innings of work in notching the 5-2 win.
McKell Barnes and Samantha Morency each rapped a two-run hit in a four-run third inning for the Beavers. Barnes finished with three singles, while Bartlett smacked two doubles as Farmington had 11 hits in the game.
Bartlett held the Owls scoreless over the first six frames, but ran into trouble in the seventh when a pair of errors led to two UMPI runs. Whitney Page tossed the last inning to close out the win.
Lainey Herring singled and doubled in the loss, while Danielle Humphrey and Emily Staples each doubled.
Nicole Russell went the distance for the Owls, allowing 11 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
In the second contest, the Beavers twice rallied from deficits before grabbing the 10-7 win.
Trailing 4-2 in the second and 7-4 in the third, Farmington came back to tie in the bottom half of each inning. Barnes slugged a two-run home run to deep center field in the fourth to give the hosts a 9-7 advantage. Morency scampered home on a wild pitch in the fifth to pad the lead to 10-7.
Barnes recorded a double to go along with her homer, while Morency doubled, homered and drove in two runs, Bartlett doubled twice and Rachel Clement singled twice. Lily Barry also knocked home a pair of runs.
Staples singled three times for the Owls, while Herring’s two-run double headlined a four-run second. Cassie Green (Truro, Nova Scotia) singled twice with Russell singling and doubling.
Page tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief to collect the victory. Page walked a pair and gave up four hits.
Herring took the loss in a complete game with three walks and a strikeout.
