This is in response to the letter from Klaus Kuck, printed Sept. 20.
I love the notion that somehow "racist, anti-Obama conservatives" have destroyed civility in America. This has been the talking point for some time now and I would find it laughable, if the future of our "great and beautiful country" were not at stake.
Did Kuck and all of the rest miss the George W. Bush years? Did they miss the movie and books made about the assassination of Bush? Did they miss the outrageous actions of Code Pink and Cindy Sheehan? Did they miss Bush's State of the Union speech where roughly half of Congress (you guess which half) booed him? Did they miss the prayers of hope that Dick Cheney's pacemaker fail? Did they miss the almost constant chant of "fascist" and "Nazi" and "Hitler" thrown at Bush for eight years. Did they miss the full page ad about General "Betrayus"?
I could go on. Many people seem to have missed what is now so very clear. I do not suggest that such behavior is profitable, but I cannot stand to hear these hypocrites whine and moan about the same types of behavior they either incited, approved of or ignored for eight years.
Lastly, did those people remove those sad little bumper stickers from their cars that read, "Dissent is the purest form of patriotism"? After all, it appears that while dissent from a Republican president is patriotic, dissent from Obama is obviously racist.
Frank Phillips, Auburn
There are many differences
There are many differences between the Bush years & the Obama years.
One, Obama was elected by a overwhelming majority.
Two, Many people gave Bush the benefit of the doubt when it came to his policies whether on homeland security or the wars. Obama hasn't been President a full year and conservatives believe somehow Obama is distroying America. They forget the Trillions of dollars that Bush has added to our debt and how he destroyed America's Reputation in the world.
Three, Code Pink and Cindy Sheehan are not elected officials. Many Republican officials have propagated lies about the President whether that he is anti-American, he wants death panels, that he wasn't born in the US, that he is a Socialist etc etc.
Four, there is a difference between booing and shouting "You lie!"
Five, which sounds more like Hitler, President that invaded 2 countries and tells the rest of the world if your not with us your against us and also spies on it's own citizens or a President that wants Healthcare for all.
Six, peacenicks don't carry guns "racist, anti-Obama conservatives" do. That should make anyone scared.
Seven, all of the peace protesters that I talked to while I was supporting the war were intelligent and ended up being right. Most of the anti-Obama conservatives seem to be either racist, crazy or not to bright.
For someone that "cannot stand to hear these hypocrites whine and moan" you seem to be whining and moaning quite a bit yourself.

During the Bush years, anyone who questioned the actions of the Bush administration was branded as "unAmerican" and "unpatriotic" by supporters of the administration. When the administration lied to us about WMD in Iraq, any questioners were rapidly shut down.
Equating disapproval of Bush, who was not a particularly competent president, with the kind of confrontational rudeness exhibited by Rep. Joe Wilson, for instance, who did not simply boo, or display disapproval in a manner consistent with traditional rules of House etiquette, is misleading and mistaken. Nor does it make sense to equate disapproval of Bush with a lack of civility. Cindy Sheehan was not anti-Bush, per se; her protest outside the Crawford ranch was an anti-Iraq war protest.
People disagree on a number of subjects; why is it not possible any more to disagree politely, and to agree to listen to multiple points of view without foaming at the mouth and spewing insults at those with whom one disagrees?
If anything, in my experience, those on the left are more often cursed with too much politeness, trying earnestly to have discussions with individuals who have no interest in honest dialog, but rather wish to promote their opinions without bothering to listen.

Publikwerks,
I also think that labelling opposition to the President as racist is also a bad tactic. I don't. I label the organizations starting with the Republican Party as racists because they have followed for years political strategies that are racist. Southern Stategy - bring into the party white racist democrats, prevent blacks from voting, expelling illegal immigrants knowing that will force many citizens to leave the country and not vote. The Caricatures, the use of Obama's middle name, the Birther movement, these are just recent overt racist attacks. In fact, the "Joker" characture reminds me very much of Goebbel's Caricatures of Jews.
Now the right is attacking school children for singing a song favorable to the President in February. This skit was part of Black History Month. A celebration of the sucesses of Black Americans. What is more remarkable then raising to be President? And you will notice that they also sang songs describing the good works of George Washington and Abe Lincoln, but that's not mentioned. In elementary school I think we all wrote or sang or did something on President's Day to celebrate one or all of our Presidents. Why then attack Obama? He had been in office less than a month. What's different between Obama and Bush? Given that the right contains many racists we can only reasonably assume its Obama's skin that calls up this hatred.

Every hear of George Wallace? What party did he belong to? I'll give you a hint, he wasn't a Republican, Independent, Libertarian, Green Party....
Racism knows no political or territorial boundaries, and just because one disaggrees with another person's ideas, it does not make he or she a racist.

No this is not true. It just continues the racist rapid conservatives amnesia. Anyone hear of McCarthyism. Or Richard Nixon's Senate race where he called his opponent a communist. Or the Republican produced faked Photograph that proported to be the Sec. of State Meeting a communist agent. The conservatives began attacking civility in the US in 1932. They tried to overthrow the US government in 1934. Don't talk to me about George Bush. Everything the left said about Bush has turned out to be absolutly true. That's the difference where the right invents scandals that don't exist; the left tells the truth.

How can liberals even respond to Phillips' comments; they're all true. Truth and liberal don't fit in the same sentence. Jabba's definition of liberals is o.k., but liberals are merely conservatives who haven't been mugged yet.

Perfectly well written letter, the facts mentioned happened and speak for themselves. Hypocrat and Democrat should alway be used in the same context. Maybe a new word is in order " Hypocrat." Anyone who questions the current administration policies is now subject to name calling, the most popular name being a racist. An unknow author made statement I find interesting. " What is the difference between God and Obama? God doesn't think he is Obama. "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms,it will be because we destroyed ourselves." Abraham Lincoln

The Obama camp accused Hillary of being a racist for daring to disagree with him on certain issues during the primaries, while of course her camp cried foul and labeled him a sexist whenever the opportunity presented itself. It's just too convenient to blame it on one's minority status rather than the possibility that others might rationally disagree with a controversial position. New levels of incivility were certainly set over the past administration which does not bode well for this one or any future ones unless both sides figure out that we all have the good of the country at heart even if we have differences on how that can best be achieved.
