Maine PAC launches campaign against gay marriage

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — A new political action committee that opposes Maine's same-sex marriage referendum on November's ballot is formally launching its campaign.

Michael Heath and Paul Madore, co-chairmen of the No Special Rights PAC, and their supporters are holding a press conference Saturday on the steps of Lewiston City Hall.

Heath and Madore have held leadership roles going back to the early 1990s opposing gay rights and gay marriage initiatives in Maine.

They say they've hired a treasurer for the PAC and begun raising money, and vow that they'll be outspoken in their opposition to the proposal to legalize gay marriage in Maine.

I'd also like to thank both Barry and Charlotte for a choosing to adopt "the silent approach".

Said very well Barry King!

Thank you for your most recent post, especially what it means to be a good Christian. Wish there were more people - Christian or otherwise, who think like you. Well stated.

Mike Lachance's picture

If you accept that in being

If you accept that in being "a good Christian" living as a practicing homosexual is acceptable to Jesus, then i'm afraid this subject will not go away when you address such opinions to actual "good Christians"...

 's picture

We are getting off topic but

I am pretty sure I was not making any anti-Christian remarks and am aggravated to be accused of doing so.

I completely disagree with the statement that one cannot be a good Christian and gay. That is my point. It offends me that you are calling many wonderful people sinners because of their sexual orientation. I guess I don't buy into that belief system because it is too closed-minded for me. And that's my opinion.

Mike Lachance's picture

Charlotte, Again, recognize

Again, recognize the difference between "being" and "doing" (living, acting, promoting, participating, etc)
HUGE difference.
Living the lifestyle is issue, not one's internal struggles.

I suggest reading this quick outline on the subject:

Barry King's picture

Psuedo Theologians...

...garner no more respect from me than Pseudo Intellectuals, both of whom profess to "KNOW" all, but in reality, KNOW very little. I consider them to be equal to someone who reads the Headline in a newspaper and then speaks of what they believe to be the context of the article, when actually that don't KNOW what the article is about, at all.

I read most of the diatribe on the link that you posted and the first thing that I noticed was the mistaken paraphrasing when author used the following quoted line, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them.' The actual line is"...bring them out that we may KNOW them."

Secondly, for you to believe that everything in the Bible is a literal transcription of God's word is, at best, naive. The Bible has been written, edited and re-written more times than you have offered your interpretation as absolute. I should close this subject right now, because it is not in context with the subject of the thread. This "debate" is regarding LEGAL aspect of same sex marriages, and I said very plainly that I had no problem with the beliefs and practices of ANY Church. I must ask, however, if you belong to the Pentecostal Church. I ask this because the author also quoted a line which equates liars with murders. There is a big difference between these two sins, in my mind, and only extreme, right wing, religious zealots would believe the two are deserving of the same punishment.

The biggest difference between you and I is that you are a Christian Fundamentalist and I am a (GOOD!) Christian. I believe in a benevolent, forgiving and loving God, and you obviously believe in a "powerful and vengeful" God. The God that I believe in HATES NO ONE, and loves EVERYONE, whether they be Muslim, Buddist, Jewish or even atheist.

I will, since I asked you to answer a question for me, respond only one more time to any posting that deals with the Church's involvent in, or opinion of, same sex marriages.

Peace, and God Bless YOU!

Barry.... Seriously.

Are you THAT lost??? You state: "I noticed was the mistaken paraphrasing when author used the following quoted line, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them.' The actual line is '...bring them out that we may KNOW them.' "

READ IT Barry...
GEN 19:
5 And they called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them."
6 Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, 7 and said, "I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly."
8 "Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof."

The Hebrew word for "to know" is a homonym for "to copulate". If you seriously are trying to convince people that Lot's daughters had never "been aquainted casually" with ANY man, you are quite "out there". Further context by Lot "do not act so wickedly" and "do with them as you please" clarify exactly what the Hebrew use of the term "to know" inferred and the context for its use.

The Bible IS the TRUE and INSPIRED word of God. While literal translations are near impossible, every peer-reviewed scholarly translation over the last 3400 years (OT) and 1700 years (NT) throughout the various histories of the respective books has held closely and consistently to what we read today. Of course there are some who question a word or two through translations, context, dialects etc, but regardless, the majority of theologins and scholars have arrived at a point where the concensus is at hand.

The author of the article linked makes various points, but nowhere does he call for the death of homosexuals. The point you have clearly missed is that nowhere does God say having a mental issue, addiction, inglorious past, or committing crimes in the past will assure an eternity in hell. In fact, he makes it clear that there will be FORMER liars, FORMER cheaters, FORMER murderers, etc in Heaven. But not all. Only those who accept Christ as their savior and cast away their wicked past are saved. So, you can be saved, but that is highly unlikely if you are promoting homosexuality, and continue to live an active gay lifestyle.

You then state: "you are a Christian Fundamentalist and I am a (GOOD!) Christian. I believe in a benevolent, forgiving and loving God, and you obviously believe in a "powerful and vengeful" God. The God that I believe in HATES NO ONE, and loves EVERYONE, whether they be Muslim, Buddist, Jewish or even atheist."

I believe in a benevolent, forgiving and loving God who is also at the same time, powerful and unequivocable with absolute justice. The God you choose to believe in is without absolutes, relative to your desires and without justice. Love has little to do with God's absolute justice. Yes God loves EVERYONE, but that love does not negate all else, certainly not of justice. And the word hate is in the Bible and is expressed by God toward things, acts, and practices He does not approve of. (not people, per se')

To finish, let me ask you this, since you've brought it up:
Do you believe, as a Christian, that a Muslim, Buddhist or Athiest will go to heaven?

No one can interpret the Bible literally.

The Bible says we shouldn't eat pork - doesn't that mean if you eat bacon you aren't a practicing Christian? It says that a man who refuses to impregnate his widowed sister-in-law should be put to death, it says whoever strikes his father or mother should be put to death. It says a lot of hateful an unloving things that if we did, we'd be in a boatload of trouble.

So please don't tell me 1) that all those "good Christians" out there don't enjoy unChristian sex acts in the privacy of their own homes and 2) that just because the literal translation in the Bible says something that it must be the truth in the most strict sense...then no one would be following God's words literally and none could be considered good practicing Christians.

Just saying.

Charlotte, If we were living

Charlotte, If we were living in an Old Testament world (as in the Jewish), than yes, eating prtk would still be forbidden. The OT is the old covenant. The New Testament, if you bother to read it is the game changer and the entire crux of Christianity. You cannot be a Christian and ignore the NT because without the NT there is no Christ.

Mark 7
[15] There is nothing from without a man that entering into him, can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man.

[16] If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. [17] And when he was come into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him the parable. [18] And he saith to them: So are you also without knowledge? understand you not that every thing from without, entering into a man cannot defile him: [19] Because it entereth not into his heart, but goeth into the belly, and goeth out into the privy, purging all meats? [20] But he said that the things which come out from a man, they defile a man.

[21] For from within out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, [22] Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. [23] All these evil things come from within, and defile a man.

John 15
[3] Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you.

Titus 1
[15] All things are clean to the clean: but to them that are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean: but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

Now about your other Anti-Christian attacks, might I suggest actually picking up a copy of the Bible if you dont have one (get one for free at the Salvation Army) and doing some reading. Youre citing OT stuff and applying OT laws to NT Christianity. Of course it doesnt work!

If you would like to talk more about sin and saving grace I'd be happy to help you on your walk toward a more clear understanding.

Come on folks...

Any article about so called "gay rights" seems to create a tiny "Pride Festival" of outlandish Heterophobia here...

The bottom line is this. There is big money behind the Pro-Gay movement and there is big money behind some of the opposition movements.

That being said if the people vote it down then thats the willof the people. For or Against. If you dont like the outcome keep fighting for what you believe in... for or against.

Anyone who claims to be a "devout Christian" who LIVES a gay LIFESTYLE and promotes Gay marriage, gay union, gay pride, or gay whatever as a public act and public or private lifestyle is anything but Christian. Period. Jeses' love for all of us as equal doesnt say homosexuals are inferior in anyway (they arent)... but choosing to live a gay lifestyle is discussed clearly and God's teachings on this are without a doubt crystal clear.

Satan also believes in Jesus.

Homosexuals cannot choose to live the lifestyle and proclaim themselves God fearing Christians.
Just saying... this isnt about hate, its about hypocrisy. It isnt about love its about His word. As Christians we Love the sinner but hate the sin. It's that simple.

(BTW: no excuse for outlandishly innappropriate gay-bashing websites.... tact is really important and many on the anti-gay side have lost all sense of tact, and love when it comes to this subject.)

Barry King's picture

Subletly Hidden, Mike,... your relatively benign words, is a strong message of hatred and prejudice, BUT the one subject that I WILL NOT argue with ANYONE is their own, personal religious beliefs.

You are entitled to believe that I am not a "Christian" because I am gay. I, personally, do NOT believe this. I AM a "good" Christian, with a devout belief that the God I love and worship is Omnipotent, and He created Every fiber of my being, including my sexual orientation. Being gay, is not, at least for me, a choice. God made me who and what I am today, and He has Blessed me, throughout my life, for following the path that He destined for me. (By the way, I am NOT a "God fearing" Christian, as you inferred that all "good" Christians are; I am a "God Loving" Christian!)

I have read the Bible, EVERY WORD of the Bible. I went to a small, but progressive High School, in Livermore Falls, and we read the Bible, in English Class, not as a religious document, but simply as a book. We discussed and in some cases dissected every verse, and the quotes that you shared, and directed toward Charlotte, do not, IN MY OPINION, support your belief that being gay is a sin.

In closing, I will say that if you had respected the context of this thread, we wouldn't even be discussing this. I said, several times, in my original posting, that I am addressing the LEGAL ASPECTS of this situation, not religion. I granted that any Church or people who choose not to agree or support my opinion, have that right, but the Government Does Not.

In closing, I will say, simply, that it is not I who am a hypocrite. I will also add that you MUST on all threads were I am the original poster, be respectful of every posters opinion, or I will delete you. If you want to go down the "religious" road, and discuss the theological, rather than the Legal aspects of this subject, then please start a new thread of your own.

Hatred and Prejudice? Really?

If you see everything or anything anyone says that is counter to your gay agenda (and thats what it is) as hatred and prejudice, then perhaps its time for you to put your shoes back on. They fit well.

Nobody has said you arent a Christian for being gay. But if you accept that "God" (does that mean Jesus Christ to you?) created you and who you are, then you must accept that we are all born sinners and we must all be born again to be saved. God loves all of us equally, but if youve read the Bible (and accept it as the one true word, the Truth) than you know that no one comes to Him except through Jesus. We are to to be born again, cast away our old sinful selves and renew or mind. If you are Gay (or feel you were born that way, or whatever the "causes" may be, that is fine with God, but if you choose to ignore His word and continue the sin, living a life that is an Abomination to God than you are indeed lost. If you choose to live a gay lifestyle knowing Gods word on the matter, you are not a Christian. This is not my opinion, this is the Word of God in the Bible NT & OT.

Can someone addicted to porn, or gambling or extramarital sex continue such things knowingly, making excuses for themselves all the time claiming "God loves them" and rationalizing their lifestyles away because they see them selves as protected by "Gods Love"?
No. God is a Just God. He loves us all but it is our faith and our fear (youve missed the point there) that gives of the true change Jesus prescribes. If you dont (wont, cant) fear God then you are a long way from salvation. (not my word, not my opinion, His word)

You cant take the justice of a Just God out and relace it with more Love. God is 100% Truth 100% Just and 100% Love. 300% does add up in our minds but it is what it is.

As far as respect goes you are disrespecting Christianity by staking it out as some sort of safe having for practicing homosexuals. Have you considered deleting yourself? It's all I can do to be respectful in the face of such complete drivel.

You state this isnt about religion. Well, I have news for you Barry. It is about Salvation and Society, and Life and Death and Justice and Eternity. Break out of your bubble and get the Message. Look at your self from outside your selfish little gay world (we all have our selfish side) and look to the future when judgement day comes. If you have no fear of God and His True Judgement, then I truly am sorry.

Barry King's picture

I can respond to this comment, very quickly.

GAY AGENDA??? Really, Mike? Believing that all gays are united in a cause, with a specific plan is just plain ignorance! Gay people are as different from each other as straight people, and if there is an agenda, no one has told me about it.

Finally, Mike, I will say that I DO NOT fear God, and I DO believe that I will be granted entrance to the "Kingdom of Heaven" on judgement day. The fact that you do not believe this is of NO IMPORTANCE to me.

AND...This IS NOT "about religion"! Period!

Why won't he go away........

I am so sick of seeing, reading or even hearing about Micheal Heath. I just can't stand people like him who feel that they are right, everyone else is wrong.
I am not gay, I do however believe in letting people live their lives as they see fit. I don't feel threatened by what two people decide to do, whether they be man and woman, man and man, or woman and woman. As I have said many times, what two people decide to do is in no way going to affect my life.
If someone wants to disagree with me that's fine, I don't claim to know everything, and I'm far from perfect. Fanatics however don't abide by everyone elses rules. They employ money, threats and intimidation to reach their goals. They don't allow a person to have an opinion. If it's not to their liking, its wrong.
I'll continue to live my life as I see fit. I'll continue to have an opinion, right or wrong. If these idiots want a PAC to push their agenda, that's fine, just don't try pushing it on me. That's my opinion.....

Barry King's picture

Hey, Mr. Heath and Mr.

Hey, Mr. Heath and Mr. Madore, I'll type this S L O W L Y so that you can understand my opinion. Committed GAY Couples DO NOT WANT any SPECIAL rights, we only want EQUAL RIGHTS! We are talking about the LEGAL aspect, ONLY.

I personally have a devout belief in God and in Jesus, as the Son of God, religious views were never mentioned during the ceremony to validate our LEGAL MARRIAGE, here in CT!

My LEGAL SPOUSE, Charles Burwell, and I have been in a committed relationship for almost 34 years and we have been LEGALLY MARRIED for over 2 years, since we moved back to CT. We don't have any special rights, but we are happy that we have EQUAL RIGHTS, at least in a few states, we now need to be "granted" these same rights, by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

I believe that if Churches choose not to recognize or perform same sex marriages, and they choose to discriminate against a segment of their parishioners, then, so be it, since they do not (alledged) operate with Federal or State money, then they have that right, BUT...the GOVERNMENT DOES NOT have the same right.

Our government is "For the people, BY the people". ALL PEOPLE!

They are certainly "out there"

I visited this website and am appalled at their home page. I can tell they're crazy and I don't even know them. I would much rather surround myself with people who share the message of love rather than hate. I also support leaving people alone and letting everyone who wants to be married get married. So sick of some people thinking their religion and their way is the ONLY way.

Jason Theriault's picture

The Madore's are crazy.

I went to school with their son, Ethan, at St Peter's. They yanked him from school when they heard we would be covering sex ed. Catholic school sex ed was too much for them.

That alone wouldn't make me too biased, but then there is their term for same sex marriage....

"Sodomy based Marriage."

It's fun when people are concerned about protecting children, and then infuse the debate with terms that there is no way you want to explain to kids.

But don't take my word for it, here's there website:

And the first thing you see on their website:

RONALD RIML's picture

So did Paul Madore

Get sodomized when he was in the Military????

There are rules against that if one is unwilling.

Or didn't he serve???

 's picture

Well someone should gently

Well someone should gently remind them that you don't have to be gay to perform sodomy.....

Pamela Belanger's picture

I'm all for same sex

I'm all for same sex marriages......they R human also n deserve the right to love n marry whom ever they choose.....people just need to get over themselves n leave them alone they aren't hurting anyone

 's picture

So they're forming a PAC

So they're forming a PAC called "No Special Rights"? From my side of the fence allowing a heterosexual couple to marry and not allowing a same-sex couple to certainly feels like a "special right".
