R. Karajin: Workers from out of state

This isn't a complaint . . . more of an observation.

Everybody seems to realize that there are millions of people out of work, in this state and elsewhere.

As I was driving on the back streets in Auburn, I noticed companies or a company that were operating machinery and vehicles from New Hampshire. It was obvious that they were working on the construction of the road.

I have no fault with their workmanship, but why are people from New Hampshire working in Maine while so many Mainers are out of work?

Work

The company from N.H. does not have to pay the same tax or the same workman's comp. or the same premium for insurance as the company from Maine. This puts Maine companies at a disadvantage when trying to come up with a lower bid for the same job. If you want Mainers to work, then we need to do what JFK did and cut taxes. We don't need any more thinking like LBJ who spent the largess created under JFK's short term. Maine's taxes hurt us all and keep our poor unemployed. If you want job creation, then make an environment that fosters growth and doesn't penalize success.

Because it costs so much more

Because it costs so much more to operate a business in Maine. The New Hampshire company can come to Maine and do the job cheaper.
