D. Theriault: Which choice more logical?

This is in response to William LaRochelle’s June 27 letter that ended with, “No God, no devil, no heaven, no hell. Just us and this one life." It is to his sense of logic that I respectfully appeal.

Early preachers, along with Christian authors and apologists such as C. S. Lewis and Josh McDowell, argued that if Jesus Christ isn’t who he claimed to be (that is, God, the son of God and Lord), then he had to be either a shyster or seriously disillusioned for saying so.

The question then, from these respected men of God is, “Who is Jesus Christ to you — Lord, liar or lunatic?”

If you honestly believe that he was a “good moral teacher," consider that if Jesus wasn’t who he claimed to be, then he was either a liar or a lunatic, either of which would automatically disqualify him as a “good moral teacher.”

The only respectful option left then is that he is Lord, who, like it or not, said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”

LaRochelle believes that there is no afterlife. I believe that when I die, because I believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior, I will spend eternity with him rather than in eternal torment.

If I’m wrong, who cares? I won’t even know it. But if LaRochelle is wrong, then . . .

Which choice sounds more logical?

Which seems more logical?

Which seems more logical? Well, religion requires a leap a faith. Good luck trying to convince people of heaven and hell with an appeal to logic.

reply to Mr. Theriault

Thank you for your reply to my letter of June 27, Mr. Theriault. I’ll reply to it in due course in another letter, which will not see publication before July 27, however. That is Sun Journal policy: a 30-day interval must elapse between the publication of any two letters by the same writer. If for some reason the paper declines to publish my reply to you, then I’ll return here with it.
