Convicted Auburn teacher faces federal sex charges

LEWISTON — A former Auburn music teacher, convicted last year of molesting and assaulting students, has been charged with two counts of transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

James Raymond, 28, of Auburn, was indicted by a federal grand jury last week and was arrested on a warrant Friday. At a hearing in U.S. District Court in Portland on Friday afternoon, he pleaded not guilty to both counts. He is being held in federal custody until a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig M. Wolff said.

According to the indictment, Raymond transported a girl younger than 18 from Maine to New Hampshire and back to Maine on July 14, 2007, and Aug. 13, 2007, with the intent to have sex, specifically, felonious sexual assault and unlawful sexual touching. The indictments, handed down Wednesday, were sealed until after Raymond's arrest.

Wolff declined to say whether the alleged victim is a former student of Raymond.

Each of the two counts is a Class A crime and carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life and/or a fine of $250,000.

The investigation was carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Auburn Police Department.

Raymond was tried and convicted at Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn in August 2008 on five charges: two counts of unlawful sexual touching and three counts of assault, all misdemeanors. The three girls involved were music students of Raymond at the time of the incidents in April 2005 and September and October 2007, according to the indictment.

One girl was a first-grader at East Auburn Community School, another was a second-grader at Park Avenue Elementary School and the third was a fifth-grader at Webster Intermediate School.

Raymond had denied the charges and testified in his defense, but the jury was shown his interview with police in which he confessed to having urges to touch young girls and sometimes acted on those urges.

He was sentenced to spend 60 days in jail and two years on probation.

Raymond was a teacher at Park Avenue and East Auburn Community elementary schools. He also was an assistant marching band instructor at Leavitt Area High School in Turner, founder of the Central Maine Children's Theater Project and an instructor for the Central Maine Children's Chorus.

To auburnnn ......its sad

To auburnnn ......its sad that you feel just because he never made advances towards you that you feel he is innocent and such a harmless man. Pedophiles don't touch every child they come in contact with, so if this is what you base your thoughts on, you are dead wrong. Though you may feel this guy isn't a scarey sex fiend....he's a sick man that is doing a lot of horrible damage to young girls. I was close friends with a guy and thought the world of him. We worked together as well. One day the cops came in and arrested him for child pornography. I thought I "knew" him too...and until then...thought he was a wonderful family man.

If you look at the timeline

If you look at the timeline of these charges and what he confessed to earlier, it appears this man was fighting his demons for quite a while, until the urges were irresistable. The bravery of the young lady who reported the initial charge, combined with the diligence of the parent in instructing the child what was appropiate, and the determination of the school officials who insisted the police not sweep this under the rug, as usual, means many many children were spared the nightmare of this guy. Get him off the streets.

Hey Tron, actually the child

Hey Tron, actually the child reported it to the parent and the parent did NOTHING.....the child then reported it to someone else. The mother didnt want to accuse someone if it wasnt true. It was some lame ass excuse she gave, but thank god for the second person she reported it to that they followed through on this.

I stand corrected, but still

I stand corrected, but still maintain that he should go to jail. None of that republican do good philosphy for him or his kind.

He may not have touched you

He may not have touched you or made you feel uncomfy but he certainly touched other children and ADMITTED to having those urges to touch children inappropriately......So I have to disagree with you on whether he deserves to go to prison....I say he does....dont give him an oppurtunity to commit touch another child in any way shape or form

So, why are you calling him

So, why are you calling him a convicted Child Molester, I don't believe he was convicted of molestation.

He was convicted of

He was convicted of molesting and assaulting students. What would call it?

Keep giving these pedophiles

Keep giving these pedophiles such light sentences so they can come right back out into society and attack more children! If they don't keep Raymond locked away, he's going to hurt so many little girls..... and speaking from my own childhood, it stays with us forever. I will always carry part of that "hurt little girl" inside me. So the law needs to stop Raymond and keep in behind bars. I am so tired of reading how these offenders keep re-offending.

This guy needs to be put

This guy needs to be put away for a very long time if not forever. There is no "cure" for sexual deviants like this. We need to protect our children from the likes of James Raymond; they are our most valuable asset.
