AUGUSTA — Democratic lawmakers are calling on Maine Gov. Paul LePage to apologize for his remarks comparing the Internal Revenue Service to the Gestapo.
The Democratic leaders of the House and Senate issued a statement Sunday calling LePage's language "intentionally offensive."
Rep. Emily Cain and Sen. Justin Alfond said Holocaust survivors and Word War II veterans who witnessed the terror of the Adolf Hitler's secret police "should not be trivialized for political shock."
In his weekly radio address Saturday, LePage attacked the Supreme Court's decision that upheld President Barack Obama's health care law.
LePage said the court's decision has "made America less free" and that people have no choice but to buy health insurance or "pay the new Gestapo — the IRS."
LePage previously told the NAACP to "kiss my butt," called protesters "idiots," referred to state government middle managers as "corrupt" and while campaigning for governor, said he'd tell Obama to "go to hell."
Democrat Ethan Strimling, a political commentator, said Monday that the Gestapo remark represents the first time the governor has used such racially-charged language.
The Anti-Defamation League's regional director called the governor's remark "hurtful and inappropriate."
Derrek Shulman says comparisons to the Nazi police force have no place in politics or anywhere else.

so
Extreme left wing kooks = governor of Maine. These are equal in the eyes of members of this forum? Does that make him an extreme right wing kook? Shouldn't we expect better from an elected official than talk radio blather? It seems to me there should be a distinction between governing and campaigning and between entertainment and serious political talk. Well he was on the radio. Maybe it just went to his head. Personally I'm really getting tired of over the top rhetoric that does not inform, is insulting most of the time and is clearly manipulative.

The right wingers dig out something from the left that, in their minds, nullifies the transgressions of the right.
I don't care who said it, Democrat or Republican. We need to hold him to a higher standard because his stupidity makes headlines where the blowhard at the coffee shop doesn't. Biden's stupid comment about workers in 7-11's got just as much national press, maybe more since he was VP, as LePage's stupid Gestapo remark. What Harry Truman said six decades ago isn't even relevant because it was 6 decades ago. If he said it now, there would be an uproar. When I worked for a bookseller, we carried a children's book called "Little Black (you know the rest)." It was eventually pulled by the publisher as well as the store owner. But, that book was written in a different era so there was no uproar when it came out. That doesn't make it okay for LePage to open his mouth and spew stupid statements that make headlines.
Stop pointing fingers and understand that just because a pol is Republican doesn't make him or her the second Coming. Deal with the simple fact that LePage is a loose cannon with all that implies. I think the Gang of Eight needs to make another trip to the Governor's Office - this time with the rough draft of a Recall Bill. Otherwise, he's going to bring down the whole house of cards.
As strong a Democrat as I am - we do need an opposition to keep us from becoming as arrogant as Republicans have become since 2010.

I'm not sure in what way the IRS is like the Gestapo, I think the comment in this way cheapens what his opinion seemed to have been, that he feels the government is forcing health insurance on everyone. I respect the Governors and many other Americans opinions who do not like the ACA, though I do not agree.
The real story in this article, I think, and what is more disturbing to me are the number of comments here which come across as hateful, even bigoted. That would be a better example of the role of the Gestapo in Nazi Germany.

Paul LePage compares the I.R.S. to the gestapo. Wrong? yes. Improper? yes. Totally uncalled for? absolutely. This type of comment should not come as any surprise to anyone who has followed LePage's cronic "foot in mouth" disease. Also he should keep in mind that he does have to file income tax returns next year. I guess that would be the closest he'll come to meeting his maker, on this earth. I'm pretty thick skinned, I'm not going to let that comment bother me. That being said, If anyone were to compare "Me" to Paul LePage, then the S#$T would hit the fan.....

Yes. ush, heney, Rove, Ascroft. ALL were called Nazi's, Hitler, etc. along with the whole administration. Where was the liberal and Jewish outrage then? .... (silence)..... that's right. It didnt exist. As a matter of fact, it was applauded and usually followed by a chortling and mocking laughter from those very same spineless liberals who are now "aghast" as such a comment.
Suddenly the I.R.S. is a saintly bunch of moral do-gooders in need of defense? NO. LePage made a common figure of speech. That means it was not a literal statement. Regardless, the IRS *is* becoming more and more like the gestapo, along with the EPA (they seem to be in a race).... the figure of speech doesnt refer to Jewish history. It doesnt refer to holocaust victims. It refers to a Govt organization that demands papers, levies unreasonable demands on individuals, carries out its own for of justice without regard to freedom or due process, and works outside the law. Yes, Gestapo is not too far off base in these regards.
Get over it folks.

If we didn't have as many people sitting around thinking up things to put on the list of "WE CAN'T SAY THAT ANYMORE" this country would be alot better off. We can't say Merry Christmas cause it might offend someone, we can't say illegal aliens cause they might be offended, we can be stopped for a routine police check, seatbelt law or whatever but if your black, brown or where a sheet around your head its profiling. If your here "with papers" and you are asked to see them and your here legally then whats the problem. This is not Nazi Germany and whoever made that comparison is a sicko. I have lived here all my life and if I get stopped for a light out or whatever I have to show my license. I have had a license for 50 yrs. and had to show my birth certificate to get it and those that are infiltrating this country shouldn't have to because?? YOUR HERE IN THIS COUNTRY WHETHER LEGALLY OR NOT THESE ARE THE LAWS AND THEY APPLY TO EVERYONE. The Gestapo were a rotten bunch and mistreated the Jews and others and no one denies that and to call the IRS gestapo is no reflection on those that were persecuted or the good German people and only points out the bad guys not the victims. Some of the warped minds around here could find a problem with someone saying "Have a nice day" This country is changing so fast and its being destroyed from within. I am a white American and we are all being profiled because of all the ways we are trying to please people that are here illegally or legally but we support. We better start ruling while we are still the majority cause that is dwindling fast. The little guy has to worry about the IRS as the fat cats that owe all the money can get one of those shyster lawyers to cut their debt in half and can still keep their boat if they have any left to pay him with. Do you know that if you die you can find a lawyer that will sue because you ate cheerios as a child or had measles or they will find a way so that they make money which is the key.

Right-wing blogosphere baselessly fearmonger over IRS weapons purchase
"Several right-wing blogs have baselessly fearmongered over an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) purchase request for 60 shotguns for its Criminal Investigation Division (CI), stating that "we should have seen this coming" and that that it indicated that President Obama "thinks they're gonna have to start shooting at us to squeeze what we have left out of us." But IRS CI employs 2,700 special agents who are required to "carry and use a firearm," and as the purchase request itself indicates, the IRS has previously purchased shotguns, as the type was selected "based on compatibility with IRS existing shotgun inventory."
Now Mike, tell us why Folks started buying "Guns 'n Ammo" like crazy after Obama got elected four years ago. Wasn't to implement Sharron Angle's suggestion of 'Second Amendment Remedies' to stop anything they perceived as tyrannical in their inflamed minds, would it???

Working vacations at Crawford were part of the norm. Presidents Fox & Putin, PM Blair, and others stayed for numbers of days at Crawford on many occaisons, along with the POTUS working staff. They were usually working. This is also true of Camp David time, and many of Reagans days at his CA Ranch. (both Bush and Reagan signed a number of Bills while at their respective ranches.)
So now going HOME and working is the equivalent of lavish Hawaiian trips, 10 day in Martha's Vineyard, Jet setting to the Taj Mahal, and constantly golfing? If Barry the Amateur was actually going home to Chicago to unwind a bit while still signing bills and hosting Heads of State you MIGHT be on to something.... but.
