In this AP file photo, Gov. Paul LePage speaks at a news conference, Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at the State House in Augusta. After a recent controversial comment comparing the IRS to the Gestapo, Governor LePage met with representatives from two Jewish groups to apologize.
AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage on Friday met with representatives from two Jewish groups following comments he has made over the past week comparing the Internal Revenue Service to the Gestapo, Adolf Hitler’s secret police force in Nazi Germany.
LePage met in the State House cabinet room with representatives from the Anti-Defamation League of New England and the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine. Both groups had issued statements calling on LePage to apologize for and retract his comments.
“We really appreciate the governor’s time meeting with us, and we’re looking forward to his radio statement,” said Emily Chaleff, executive director of the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine.
LePage first compared the IRS with the Gestapo last weekend in his weekly radio address focused on the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling to uphold most provisions of the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration’s signature health care reform law.
On Monday, LePage said he didn’t mean to insult anyone with his comments “or minimize the fact that millions of people were murdered,” but he stopped short of publicly apologizing. He did, however, apologize privately to Chaleff.
Then in Vermont on Thursday, LePage told a reporter that the IRS might not be as bad as the Gestapo, but that the federal tax collection agency is headed in that direction.
“The Holocaust was a horrific crime against humanity and, frankly, I would never want to see that repeated,” LePage said during an interview with Seven Days, an alternative weekly newspaper in Burlington, Vt. “Maybe the IRS is not quite as bad — yet.”
LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett confirmed Thursday that the governor will publicly apologize for his comments in his radio address this weekend.
What's up with the wrong dates.
Underneath the picture and in the email message, the date reads Thursday, December 15, 2011. That is really too far back. I think someone wasn't paying attention to what they were doing.
Wonder what other mistakes are made.

Although I see LePage's whole term as governor, as material for the late night comedians. After seeing more pictures, and going over all his so called off the cuff, remarks that show the real LePage. He's heading strait for an episode of "South Park"........

I would seriously recommend that LePage read from and memorize the script his writers put before him on Saturday-not to improvise, add or 'ad lib' one single word out of context, or else his entire 'apology' will be totally worthless.
He should try to sound truly sincere, and promise that he will never make another stupid set of statements linking any form of Nazism to our government or people.
It's going to be hard for him to eat crow, but that's what you get when you go off the deep end, as he did all week.

Yep, Lepage have every right to state his mind, no matter how bad it makes him and the State he represents. He is a joke, and by extension, so is the State, because he makes those comments as a representative of the State.
But yes, he has the right. And I have every equal right (as did the reporter who put him on the spot in VT) to call him to account for it and speak out against it. We all say and do things things we have to apologize for later. Not all of us do it with the full spotlight of the media on us.
I'm sure the candidate he was campaigning for is wondering whose brilliant idea it was to bring him over.
I am glad, however, that he plans to make an actual apology tomorrow, and from the text that MPBN says they have received, it actually sounds somewhat sincere. Let's hope he makes it SOUND sincere.

I say Let the Governor do his Job, Lepage shouldn't have to apologize to anyone, LePage has a Right to Voice his Opinions and Thoughts Like Everybody Else, thought this was a Free Country, GUESS NOT!!!!
None of Us Are Perfect and He is Just Stating the Facts, No matter what comments he makes, he cannot satisfy anyone, guess all these Groups Apparently Don't Like Lepage nor his Comments,
LePage is giving Everyone a Heads Up for What is Coming, WE ARE ALL LOSING ALL OUR FREEDOMS EVERYDAY,
EVERYONE BETTER ALL THINK ABOUT IT,

"He is Just Stating the Facts"
WRONG! So VERY VERY WRONG. THE IRS IS NOT LIKE THE GESTAPO.
And btw - The Governor has the right to express his opinions. Just like I have a right to call him an IDIOT for comparing the IRS to the FING GESTAPO.

...aaaaaaandd there ya go. You did it again. The Gestapo is on a whole nother plane of existence from the IRS. One collects taxes, the OTHER WAS A PART OF GENOCIDE.
Hey, lets have some fun with this.....
Well, the IRS preforms the same task as the Maine Revenue Service.
So The Maine Revenue Service is also the Gestapo
The Gestapo worked for Hitler...
The Maine Revenue Service Works for LePage
By LePage's own logic, he is Hitler.
SEE HOW STUPID THAT IS?
LEPAGE, DON'T BE STUPID.

I suggest reopening AMHI to replace as the official Governor's mansion, the Blaine House, appropriately staffed with folks who can deal with the Governor and his obvious need for supervision.
