Auburn man hit; Minot driver charged with assault

AUBURN — One man was taken to a hospital after being hit by a car Monday night, and police arrested the driver a short time later.

Auburn police Lt. Anthony Harrington said the 7:52 p.m. incident occurred at Parker and Summer streets. He said the victim, 28-year-old Bret Martel of Auburn, was transported to Central Maine Medical Center with what was believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Joseph Dehetre, 28, of Minot was taken into custody a short time later, according to Harrington. He was charged Monday night with elevated aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. His bail was set at $2,500 cash and he remained in the Androscoggin County Jail as of late Monday night.

According to a witness, who asked not to be identified, the victim and driver of the car were arguing in the moments leading up to the incident.

“The one in the car took it seriously and tried to hit him twice with his car and missed. And then he hit him the third time,” the witness saidt. “He was going pretty fast. From a dead stop to when he hit him he was going pretty good.”

The witness said the car, an older white Honda, left the scene after the crash.

Harrington confirmed Dehetre was driving a 1992 Honda in the area of Parker and Summer streets and became involved in an altercation with Martel, who was walking in the area.

Harrington said authorities located Dehetre’s vehicle at a home on Houghton Street. He was taken into custody.

The vehicle was impounded by police, according to Harrington.
