Garbage pile catches fire

A truck hauling Massachusetts garbage into Maine caught fire and dumped its burning contents alongside the Maine Turnpike in Lewiston on Saturday. Lewiston firefighters responded to Mile 83 just after 7 a.m. and tried to put out the fire as the demolition debris burned inside the truck's trailer, said Capt. Victor Gaudreau. "There was a lot of fire in that truck initially," Gaudreau said. The garbage was dumped out after firefighters from Lewiston and Sabattus could not get access to the fire. Lewiston Fire Inspector Paul Ouellette said remains from a previous house fire were mixed in with the debris and he believed those remains re-ignited and caused the fire. The truck was moving demolition waste to the Pine Tree Landfill in Hampden.

What about rocket ships? The

What about rocket ships?

The Space Shuttle's three main engines burn hydrogen and oxygen which produce WATER vapor. Many other launch vehicles use the same fuel (partial list): Centaur, Saturn V, Delta IV, H-IIA, and the European Ariane rockets.

The Shuttle's solid rocket boosters are different. Damage to the ozone layer from chlorine is a concern, but the number of launches is so small that the total effect on the environment is not very great.

Even at the highest launch rate, the Space Shuttle and Titan launches add less than 0.25% of the total chlorine present in the upper atmosphere. This tiny amount of chlorine would decrease the yearly average of global ozone by just 0.0065%. This reduction is far less than even the variation in ozone levels due to natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions and solar flares. The launch rate of vehicles with solid rocket boosters would have to be increased by at least two orders of magnitude to have a comparable effect on the ozone layer as natural processes.

China's trash incinerators (and they use filters) has moved China to the top of the list of polluter countries. These incinerators have become a growing source of toxic emissions, from dioxin to mercury. These pollutants are dangerous not only in China. Atmospheric research based on satellite observations shows they float on air currents across the Pacific to American shores.

OK, this has to stop. We

OK, this has to stop. We need a state law prohibiting the importation of trash from other states. It that is not legal, we should tax it highly to make up for the eons that this state will have to put up with it.

It doesn't matter. Pollution

It doesn't matter. Pollution is pollution and it affects us all, no matter where it happens. We need people to stop generating so much trash.
