The residents of Dixfield, Canton and Carthage should be skeptical when they read the propaganda put forth by the multimillion-dollar corporations of big wind that are ruining Maine’s mountains for subsidies and tax breaks.
They will say that others spout lies about what they are up to when they try to buy the towns’ support with things like gifts to the snowmobile clubs, the school and donations to local businesses.
All they have done is try to buy support with short-term, temporary spending.
What they will do for the towns is destroy our way of life, our economy, our views and our property values, and put our heath at risk — all to get their hands on our hard-earned tax dollars.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Residents should check and see what big wind did for towns such as Freedom and Mars Hill, and remember the propaganda tactics of other large, multimillion-dollar companies that sold the public things such as tobacco, asbestos and lead paint.
They were just like big wind — they minimized the health risks and told people they were safe and there was no proof of risk; just like big wind, they said we were overreacting.
We must not be taken in and make the same mistakes. Do we need to have millions of sick children, high tax burdens and high electric bills (like Europe) before we awaken to the false promises of big wind?

Mars Hill: 29.75%
Stetson I: 15.64%
Stetson II: 17.84%
Kibby: 20.25%
Rollins: 22.34%
Record Hill: 22.57%
More proof that wind power doesn't work. Not only is the capacity factors low for total output, but remember, it is unpredictable, unreliable generation.
I don't know about anyone else, but I would never buy an appliance for my home that worked less than 30% of the time!

Power Used by the Turbine (Parasitic Power)
Parasitic power is the power used by the wind turbine itself. During spring, summer and fall it is a small percentage of the wind turbine output. During the winter it may be as much as 10-20 % of the wind turbine output. Much of this power is needed whether the wind turbine is operating or not. At low wind speeds, the turbine power output may be less than the power used by the turbine; the shortfall is drawn from the grid.
Below is a representative list of equipment and systems that require electric power; the list varies for each turbine manufacturer.
- rotor yaw mechanism to turn the rotor into the wind
- blade pitch mechanism to adjust the blade angle to the wind
- lights, controllers, communication, sensors, metering, data collection, etc.
- heating the blades during winter; this may require 10%-20% of the turbine's power
- heating and dehumidifying the nacelle; this load will be less if the nacelle is well-insulated.
- oil heater, pump, cooler and filtering system of the gearbox
- hydraulic brake to lock the blades when the wind is too strong
- thyristors which graduate the connection and disconnection between turbine generator and grid
- magnetizing the stator; the induction generators used to actively power the magnetic coils. This helps keep the rotor speed constant, and as the wind starts blowing it helps start the rotor turning (see next item)
- using the generator as a motor to help the blades start to turn when the wind speed is low or, as many suspect, to create the illusion the facility is producing electricity when it is not, particularly during important site tours. It also spins the rotor shaft and blades to prevent warping when there is no wind.

Every power plant requires power to operate. Be it coal, nuclear, gas, biomass. So every plant uses power off the grid. How about this - show me the net power generation over a year, then we can talk real numbers.

With a power purchase agreement that can bring a developer 3 times the market price of electricity, why not use grid power at market price to move the blades enough to generate electricity back to the grid and get 3 times your money back.

The way I read it , the author is saying the State of Maine has a law, in place, that will allow the wind developers to regain the 2.2 cents per kilowatt if the PTC is ditched. The law is called " The Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS)" and our Public Utilities Commission is very much involved with the RPS. And the people who will pay the regained 2.2 cents per kilowatt are the electric consumers, the ratepayers, the people the PUC is supposed to be benefiting by securing lowest possible costs.

There are several factors relevant to low frequency noise propagation and its perception which need to be borne in mind:
· Mid and high frequency noise is attenuated by propagation through the

to the same extent from either of these effects. This means that as a
sound travels, its frequency content alters making the low frequencies
more prominent at greater distances.
· For people inside buildings with windows closed, this effect is
exacerbated by the sound insulation properties of the building
envelope. Again mid and high frequencies are attenuated to a much
greater extent than low frequencies. Thus the frequency content again
alters emphasising still further the low frequency content.
· Resonance can be set up inside a room with nodes (quiet points) and
anti-nodes (loud points). The number and position of these nodes and
anti-nodes will depend on the specific room dimensions and the
frequency of the noise. The consequence is that the room resonances
can cause elevated levels of low frequency noise at points within a
room.

Wow, then everyone near Niagara Falls must be dead and dying. That must be why there is a Superfund site at Love Canal, because of all the infrasound. I mean, if a wind turbine can cause resonance, then the sheer amount comming from Niagara Falls could shatter bones!
But you did get one point... It's all about annoyance. Someone can be annoyed by anything, and that can cause health effects. Flickering lights, ultra-infrasonics, em fields from the smart meters(woops, wrong argument). But studies have shown(see my link) that the person is sensitive to it because they are already annoyed at the wind turbine.
So you don't like wind turbine, and so you "start" feeling ultra-sonic infra beams and flickering strobe blades. To prove my point - every one of the strong opposition voices in this discussion lives near a wind turbine. Your not against wind turbines because they aren't economically viable, or are a bad idea, or cause infrasonic noise. You're against them because they are in your back yard, and you don't want them there.

Infrasound isn't some sort of mystical energy. It is sound lower than 20 hertz. The detection device, called a microphone, has been used.
And it's funny how you got one page into the report. To bad you didn't make it to their findings:

Quite the opposite. We are doing it and it will do great damage to our civilization. The NASA scientists are not wrong. There is no clean coal. Coal kills. 700,000 people a year die in China from air pollution. Oil kills. Natural gas kills. We need to find ways to reduce or eliminate our carbon contribution without killing ourselves in the bargain.
Wind power in the right place and circumstances is one of those possible solutions. Not in rural Maine; not with government subsidies that do not reguire performance. Not with politically connected folks more interested in private gain than public benefit. Not where private property is sacrificed for someone else's private gain. The devil is in the details.

The Production Tax Credit ( PTC )granted to every wind project that delivers grid scale electricity was supposed to be a short term monetary aid to enable wind energy facilities to enter the market place. It has now been 20 years plus as we await wind energy facilities to make it and they won’t need the pretax 3.7 cents per kilowatt-hour of taxpayer money to stay alive. The wind industry has reached maturity and plain old common physics proves it. It doesn’t matter how much money is granted the industry, it was not and never will be equal in reliability and costs to hydro, natural gas-fired, coal, nuclear, biomass.

In Mars Hill 17 lawsuits were settled with aggrieved property owners with one big suit still pending. Of course, there are gag orders so noboby can say what the settlements were.
In New York a wind company offered nearby homeowners "noise machines" to drown out the wind turbine whooshing and pulsing which kept them from sleeping. Those people are forced to sue for damages from a company who recognizes their turbines are a problem and offered a solution which is not only insulting but adds to the problem.
In Australia a wind developer was ordered to purchase eleven homes which a judge deemed unlivable after the turbines began operation.
There is widespread acceptance that complaints from turbines are real and monetary damages are being awarded.

First, call it what you wish, propaganda, lobbying, masterfully deceitful marketing, etc. The American public got just one side of the story regarding wind power for more than 20 years. Now, regular citizens and experts in every field have discredited the myths that the wind industry and their supporters have relentlessly put forth. It is why now the wind developers can only natter about jobs and try to cloak the influx of money based on taxpayer funding as economic development. There are scant full time jobs gained from an industrial wind site (usually 4-6) and there are many more public infrastructure jobs for which we could spend tax dollars for construction jobs rather than feed the wind industry.
Second, you want facts: here are two very salient ones relating to the Rollins Project, which I know very well. It has been on-line now for a year. According to reports to the FERC website, the project operates at 24% capacity and that figure includes the "windiest" times of the year. This is public information if one knows where to find it. On December 29, 2011 just in time for the close of books for the year, First Wind received $53.2 million of ARRA Section 1603 funds. Again, public information. This is a payment of taxpayer dollars for 30% of the Rollins construction costs.
Third, does anyone think that a $177 million project producing a fickle 24% of its capacity can ever pay for itself over it's lifespan which is likely 15 years in Maine weather? Not without subsidies and mandates. Meanwhile, hundreds of people have been victimized by negative impacts on their health and well being as well as decreased property values as the sprawling industrial wind site dominates 7 miles of blasted away, leveled, and scalped ridges with 40 turbines that are 389 feet tall.
Fourth, these are facts regarding one medium sized industrial wind site. The heinous "wind law", PL 661, states the goal of 2700 MW of installed capacity of wind power in Maine by 2020. That will mean 45 more projects of the scale of the Rollins project, costing taxpayers and ratepayers more than $5 billion and destroying up to 350 miles of Maine's uplands. All for about the same amount of electricity we can derive from one combined cycle natural gas plant like Calpine in Westbrook. This trade-off simply is not worth sacrificing Maine's vaunted "Quality of Place" for such a boondoggle.
