There was a brief kerfuffle last week when CBS reported that some of the Aurora shooting victims had no health care insurance and could be bankrupted by medical bills.
One young man, who was shot in the eye when gunman James Holmes inexplicably opened fire in a theater full of people, could face $2 million in bills.
The public outrage lasted two days before three of the five hospitals said they would pay those bills and cap the expenses of all victims. The other two hospitals are expected to follow suit.
Crisis averted. Big relief.
But the shooting raises a critical question about health care in the U.S. and the Affordable Care Act.
If it seems unacceptable to us that these unfortunate people should be bankrupted by their experience, how about the tens of thousands of people whose finances are wiped out by similarly random medical problems?
Two Harvard studies have found more than half of bankruptcies result from medical expenses or loss of income for medical reasons.
Consider a young, single woman who works for low wages at a company that does not offer health care insurance.
When she develops breast cancer or a brain tumor, not only will she be responsible for the cost of that treatment, but she will be left struggling to pay bills even as she is fighting for her life.
How can a wealthy nation think that is acceptable or just?
In the end, the hospital will write off as charity care what it cannot collect from this woman and eventually pass those expenses on to insurance policy holders and the companies they work for.
Meanwhile, this young lady will — if she survives — move forward with a bankruptcy hanging over her head and likely be unable to obtain insurance coverage at any cost because of her previous illness.
Workers and employers end up paying her bills, anyway, but the current system puts her through additional agony, ruins her credit and leaves her uninsurable.
That makes no sense.
The ACA may not be perfect, but it does address some of these extreme inequities. First, it would offer her a lower-cost way to obtain the benefits of health insurance and would require other insurance companies to insure her, despite her prior illness.
We can complain about the individual mandate provision of the ACA all day long, even though the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled it constitutional and even though it would only apply to between 1 and 3 percent of people currently without health insurance.
But to those who say repeal the ACA now, we ask a simple question: If we think it is fair that half a dozen shooting victims not be ruined by medical expenses, how do we feel about all those who are similarly struck down by accident or illness and will never receive media coverage?
About 50 million people in this country do honest work and are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare and have no health insurance. If you are not one of those people and have good employer health insurance, you certainly realize your good coverage, or your job, can disappear at any time.
While there is much we can all do to control our health, many things are beyond our control.
You may be one of the people who never smoked and yet develop lung cancer. You might find yourself at midlife with a defective heart valve. Or you might cut your fingers off with a circular saw when you are between insurance companies.
Are we willing as a civilized society to say, hey, good luck with all that?
The ACA is not perfect, but it's the only thing Congress has done to address these problems in 50 years.
If not this, then what?

"Colorado shooting shows
"Colorado shooting shows inequity in Health Care"...
What the Colorado shooting shows is that there are hundreds of wack jobs out there with or without political, racial, or religious agenda who are falling through the cracks undetected, and if someone doesn't begin getting a handle on and monitoring these birds, it won't even be safe to go out to a restaurant for a decent meal without getting all shot up.

I find it interesting that with all the purported inequity in healthcare, all victims, in fact, received healthcare. No one was left dying in the street as some people would lead us to believe – go figure.

This editorial is totally correct there are faults in the new act but it is amove in the right direction, and instead of tring to gut it lets improve upon it, I have no problem if my wages were taxed 10% and recived FULL healthcare a public option must be available to weed out multi-million dollar saleries the insurance industry executives make that would allow us to go to the hospital or have a doctor to treat us without a deductible for which we can go broke even if we have insurance the few which have hardly any deductible and dental/optical plan to boot like federal/state and city employees are a small amount of the population that have insurance which carry 5,7, or even 10 thousand dollar deductible and that is per year if a lingering illness strikes for just 5 years the person even though insured will owe 50 thousand dollars this is really sickening, The healthcare act needs to be overhauled and there will be no easy way for any of us but it is totaly broken and needs repair.

“I have no problem if my wages were taxed 10% and received FULL healthcare”
Apparently you are paying little to no federal tax as it is. Yea, I too wish I could pay 10% of my income to taxes and have free healthcare; that would be a significant reduction in my tax liability and a great bargain.
Many Americans, especially those paying the largest percentage of the Federal tax liability, are fed up with being asked to pay more taxes. Your statement in itself shows you don’t know where the current money is spent and who is paying for the majority of that tab.

And don't forget these high deductibles generally are linked to a 20% co-pay adding insult to injury.
If Washington republicans worked for their constituents instead of their party, with their one and only goal to make Obama a one term POTUS, perhaps positive change could be achieved.

There are about 21 to 32 TRILLION dollars being hidden from view of the taxman by the richest of the richest. If these people paid their share, there would be plenty of money to give us one payer health care.
Actually, there is a free lunch for these fortunate few. And it has nothing to do with the forces of nature. It has everything to do with the force of greed. Pure and simple. They are traitors to their country.
And anyone of modest means who sticks up for them is an idiot or a teabagger. But then I am repeating myself.

Hell, Mark you and I wouldn't know a tax shelter if it bit us in the ass! You have to be a millionaire to be able to hire lawyers and accountants to hide your money. Romney started campaigning for the presidency 6 years ago when he was shielding his assets and income from the IRS. He cleaned up his act 2 years ago knowing it would be closely scrutinized if he had a shot at the nomination.
Why won't he release his tax records for the past ten years? That's a no brainer.
Obama released his original birth certificate from when he was fresh out of the womb, it has been investigated by the CIA, FBI and Hawaii State Police and found to be the real deal. Why won't Romney go back 10 short years? Makes me wonder.
Back to the subject: Obama Care does not go far enough. National health care for every American citizen should be a right you receive at birth and expire at death. A tax to support it is something we should all swallow to make this dream of being cared for in time of need a reality. Obama Care is just a short step in that direction, what we need is a leap of faith that changing the status-qua will make all Americans healthier and more productive.
Our system of government has the flexibility to enact a new law and to rescind it if it does not produce it's intended goals. To just do nothing about the terrible health care system we have now is, well, un-American .

Most if not all Americans work within the law to minimize their tax liability. We take all deductions that we are allowed, invest in Roth IRAs (a tax shelter), invest in traditional IRAs and deduct the contribution, etc...
To my knowledge, Romney has broken no law. He, like most Americans, minimizes his tax liability.
That said, what is the problem? Why should Romney show his tax returns? The Democrats will make a big stink if it no matter what they reveal.
There is a stark difference between revealing tax returns vs. a birth certificate. The former is not needed as a prerequisite to the presidency, the latter is – citizenship.
You can wonder about Romney’s taxes all you want. What makes me wonder is where all your animosity for the wealthy comes from. I would find it tuff to function with all that internal anger.
