I struck a nerve among the liberal Democrats in my June 19 letter. Responses were name-calling and party-line allegations; no facts.
Fact: Democrats had full control of Congress, including all funding and taxes, from 2006 through 2010.
Opinion: The Democrats should have done the right thing and canceled the Bush tax cuts in order to pay for the war. They did nothing. Instead, they blamed George Bush for the debt increase from $8 trillion to the current $16 trillion. Scandalous, worthless mortgages were covered up by the Democratic Congress which fed into a downturn in the economy.
I am not wealthy, but I respect the wealthy people who have risked their fortunes and efforts to create businesses and thus create jobs, for which many people are thankful. The wealthy also are the major contributors to community charities, hospitals, museums, etc. They pay a large majority of the taxes in the U.S. They are also major donors to the Democrat Party. Is it wise to hold their wealth against them?
The Republican Party is not perfect, but it is clear that President Barack Obama has not done his job, and Mitt Romney has the integrity, experience and ability to get us out of the mess Obama created. Also, a change is needed in Congress.
Watch for candidates who are honest, clear-thinking and reliable people who have served Maine well. Electing them to Congress will give Maine quality representation. Some candiates' qualifications will not stand up to close scrutiny.

Senate GOP Pledges to Block All Bills Until Tax Cuts are Extended for All

Republicans have decided to block all bills unless they get their way over extending tax cuts for the wealthy:
Senate GOP pledges to block all bills until tax dispute resolved, by Alan Silverleib, CNN: Senate Republicans promised Wednesday to block legislative action on every issue being considered by the lame-duck Congress until the dispute over extending the Bush-era tax cuts is resolved and an extension of current government funding is approved.
All 42 Senate Republicans signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada…
Democrats and Republicans disagree sharply over whether the current tax rates should be extended just for families earning $250,000 or under per year, or should be extended for everyone regardless of income. …
Reid blasted the GOP letter on the Senate floor Wednesday morning, calling it part of a “cynical” and transparent” Republican strategy to “obstruct” and “delay” legislative progress while blaming the Democrats for failing to effectively govern.
“Last month, the American people issued their verdict on the Democrat’s priorities,” replied Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky. …"

Tax Reform Act of 1986 changed the definition of AGI, so data after 1986 (tax rate of 25.68% not strictly comparable)
In 2009 the average tax rate for the top 5% had lowered all the way to 20.46%
That's a tax cut for the wealthy since 1986 of 20%, So they're paying more taxes?? Only if they are earning a shidt pot more money!!!

The house has sat empty for a number of years, and required a lot of work. It had been a boat-builders' house, and the old boatyard is now a marina. Admiral MacMillan's arctic exploration schooner "Bowdoin' had been built in my back-yard. The last owner of the house converted the 1st floor to business use, and the 2nd storey and attic to living quarters. He overpriced it, which the market wouldn't bear. We bought it 'right' - Required much upgrading over the years, but it is now 'complete' as it will be. We recently replaced our ten year old PT cruiser, and have a ten year old GMC Sonoma for trips to the dump - so aren't 'car people' Going to Europe next spring on a 'River Cruise' compliments of a nice book sale outfitting a 1%'ers library who sold his business for 600 Mil.
