In rebuttal, R. Macdonald: Editorial was off-target

It must be challenging to be in the newspaper business in Lewiston, Maine — each day hustling to ferret out stories to grab the public’s attention to keep the circulation going.

It must have been a slow news day on Aug. 21; case in point, the Aug. 22 Sun Journal editorial, “Kennedy Park pool looking like a swamp.” Had the writer included the facts, of which she was well aware, the piece would have been no more than page filling.

Here are the facts: The annual pool coverage was delayed, as the company hired to close the pool and prepare it for winter could not undertake the work until a week after the pool closed for the season. Employees who would have then installed the cover were preparing for the Great Falls Balloon Festival. As such, the pool cover installation was scheduled for Aug. 22, and it was, indeed, completed on that date.

In addition, as a safety measure, the pool continues to be enclosed by an eight-foot-high gated/locked fence.

Especially egregious was the editorial’s racial tone. Why did the writer focus on “black” children? I assure you that Lewiston officials are concerned about the safety of all children, regardless of their skin color.

The editorial served only to supply ammunition to those seeking to perpetuate uncomplimentary urban legends directed toward Lewiston.

Lastly, the Sun Journal owes an apology to Lewiston residents; to those entrepreneurs who continue to invest their lives and fortunes supporting Lewiston as an evolving, vibrant city; to municipal officials; and to city staff.

Robert E. Macdonald, mayor of Lewiston

Editor's note: On Thursday evening, Aug. 23, three youngsters between the ages of 7 and 10 years old were removed from inside the pool area. The boys had climbed over the eight-foot-high gated/locked chain link fence.

Macdonald is right. Working a

Macdonald is right. Working a newspaper is challenging work, almost as challenging at barely winning a mayoral runoff election against a dead guy.

Seriously, though. The story could have died last week. All your letter did was make that photo of a sickly green, trash ridden, algae filled community pool hold the spotlight a little bit longer. Great job.

Such a strange feeling, I

Such a strange feeling, I actually agree with Mayor Macdonald for once. If these boys are willing to climb a locked fenced in area and had gotten hurt, then they would have nobody to blame, but themselves.

Where are(is) the parent(s)?

Maybe the city should close the pool and make a couple of basketball courts in its place if the parents can't supervise their children and keep them from climbing over a fence. A fence means "danger" and/or "stay out."

If the children cannot respect the rules, time to remove the benefit. A fact of life that children have to learn is "a rotten apple can spoil the whole basket." Without consequences, no one learns the hard lessons of life.

What's the point....

Strange Editor's note, you have kids who are in a place they are not supposed to be, unsupervised by parents....is this somehow the city's fault. Is that the reason the LSJ ran the piece? We can't continue to spend countless tax dollars to protect against any and every possible scenario, maybe Lewiston needs to build the fence 10 feet higher???? Parents, know where your children are, my parents did! ...and then try to turn it into a RACE issue; come on! Mayor Macdonald is right...must have been a very slow news day indeed.

Because

The point was that the fence doesn't keep people out as the mayor asserts.

However, this is a stupid subject. If someone jumps the fence and drowns, that's their own damn fault.
