Summers denies flip-flop on abortion

PORTLAND (AP) — Independent U.S. Senate candidate Angus King's campaign is accusing Republican Charlie Summers of ducking a forum hosted by the Women's Policy Center to avoid flip-flopping on abortion. Summers responded that he's always been in favor of abortion rights.

In this June 12, 2012 file photo, Republican U.S. Senate candidate and Secretary of State Charlie Summers greet supporters in South Portland, Maine. Summers' campaign released an Internet ad Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, responding to independent Angus King's criticism of U.S. Chamber of Commerce's television advertisements attacking his record as governor.

King's spokeswoman, Crystal Canney, pointed Thursday to a Bangor Daily News survey that said Summers supports abortion only in cases of rape or incest. Summers said Thursday he's always been "pro-choice" and that the survey answer was in error.

Summers canceled his appearance at Thursday evening's forum to attend a Maine Lobstermen's Association event in Rockland.

Summers also missed a debate hosted by the Maine Municipal Association. He said there will be plenty more before the Nov. 6 election. Also in the Senate race are Democrat Cynthia Dill and three other independents.

Charlie Summers lies anyway.

Charlie Summers lies anyway. He told us if he won the primary he would resign as Secretary of State and yet he is still in the position getting paid by taxpayer dollars. Since the Secretary of State oversees elections I personally believe this leads to the appearance of unethical behavior. And we are suppose to believe anything that comes out of his mouth....good grief Charlie Brown.....
