AUBURN — An armed robber had to demand money twice during a holdup Friday because the cashier thought it was a Halloween prank the first time.

Auburn police Sgt. Barry Schmieks, right, and Cpl. Scott Corey cross Minot Avenue with Corey's police dog, Inka, as they canvass the neighborhood in search of a man who robbed the Auburndale II Cleaning Center on Friday.

An unidentified man fled Auburndale II Cleaning Center at 14 Millett Drive at 2 p.m. with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

Linda Wilson, who works at the dry cleaner and laundromat in the Taylor Brook Mall, said she was with a customer near the washing machines and dryers when a man wearing a ski hat and scarf over his face pointed a handgun at her and said, "Give me your money!"

Wilson, thinking the man was in Halloween costume said, "I only have a dollar-fifty."

When she turned back to her customer, the man said, "This is no joke."

He repeated, "Give me your money!" Then pointed the gun at her again.

Wilson said she looked at the end of the barrel to see whether the gun was a water pistol. She said it didn't look real.

She walked to the cash register on the other side of the shop and gave him cash. He fled through the back door.

One of the workers at the shop said they never keep more than $20 cash in the register.

No one was injured.

Police said they had no suspect.

The man was described as white, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing 180 to 200 pounds and wearing a black knit hat, dark pants, a black coat and black sunglasses, police said.

Wilson said she plans to bring her pit bull to work next time.

Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to call the Auburn Police Department at 333-6650.
