This is in response to the story, “Aging elephants arrive at Hope,” (Nov. 4).
Anyone who knows even the most minimal bit about Asian elephants knows they belong in lush, tropical jungles, not in a barn in Maine. The Laurita brothers are putting a self-serving spin on what they have done, but Rosie and Opal don’t belong in Hope.
Asian elephants are designed by nature to roam over vast distances every day. The barn in which these two elephants will spend the majority of their time is 3,000 square feet. If the brothers truly wanted to help Rosie and Opal, they would have recommended that they be retired to a sanctuary where they could have loads of space and autonomy as well as the company of many other elephants in an appropriate climate.
The Laurita brothers haven’t evolved very far from their days with the Carson & Barnes Circus.
