I'm confused why some folks shout about keeping government out of their lives while they foist their particular viewpoint, exclusion or loophole on others. Now it's the exclusion of gay folks from equal marriage rights that the rest of us enjoy without thinking.
In the past, it was equal rights for black people; or Japanese people (remember the internment camps?); or Jewish people (remember the Nazis?).
It is the government's job to intervene on behalf of a minority that is being treated unfairly, and to ensure equal rights for everybody. It's too bad that respect and freedom in the USA have to be legislated. If people had behaved well and included everyone with love in their hearts, such extra legislation would not be needed.
But people didn't behave well. Some fired employees for being gay. Some wrote horrible things on their houses. Some bullied gay kids in school. Some beat up and killed others, just for being gay. Lots of people were mean to their neighbors, just for being gay. And some people just didn't pay enough attention.
Such behavior is not acceptable and we must stop it before we poison another generation with hate.
Everyone deserves equal treatment. Gay folks work, pay taxes, raise children, own homes, volunteer, go to school, go to church, go to war. The state Legislature is standing up for them and for all of us.
I encourage others to join me in voting "no" on Question 1, in support of liberty and justice for all.
Dorothy Raymond, Norway

Per our Constitution, each baby born in the U.S. gains equal rights the same as the next baby in the nursery. Same-sex marriage proponents are requesting special rights per same sex attractions and sexual activity beyond the equal rights they already enjoy. Benefits were extended to marriage because men and women reproduce the next generation. Without natural reproduction - FAIL! Correction Madeleine and this is a detail that most German's would insist upon. The term would be Nazi Concentration Camps, not German. And Dorothy makes an excellent point here. The detention and ultimate destruction of millions of Jews was enacted by a group that sought to destroy Jews and believed them to be of significantly lesser value than themselves. They believed this so strongly that they were willing to murder millions in order to accomplish that goal. But as I've read you previous posts through out this section, I've seen what you believe Maine's gay and lesbians citizens to be. You've accosted them as being perverted and frankly that assertion is cruel and mean spirited. The revulsion you harness regarding homosexuality serves to provide a reader the serious impression that you consider gays and lesbians to be less than worthy in comparison to someone such as yourself. Continually you write in twisted and manufactured screeds and use Maine's gay and lesbian population as the whipping post. At every turn, what you write is nothing more than a virulent diatribe against the validity and the humanity of homosexuals. What we are is insufficient for you. It grates against your moral convictions. Your disdain for same-sex marriage is clear. And ultimately if more people like you were in power (such as the Nazi party was) than I — like Dorothy, would be fearful of something quite similar happening here. Dorothy shouldn't be ashamed. Personally, I'm proud of her — and thankful. I've seen and experienced violence against gays and lesbians in Maine. It's something we should all take seriously. Civil equality is a just and fair step in the right direction.

If you have such an issue with sex education and what school grade that curriculum is taught than take the issue up with your local school board. The fact that any school teaches sex education is not at issue here. Same-sex marriage has nothing to do with teaching children. You're trying to foist a diversion in order to promote discrimination. Pedophilia: refers to an adult experiences a sexual preference for prepubescent children.

mikec is absolutely right. Adult incentuous marriage is next. Fathers will be able to marry their daughters and Mother's their son's. Educate yourself. These are already some of their defenses. If your purpose is to prevent people with dangerous genes from marrying each other, why use a crude standard such as kinship? Why not test everybody for bad genes, ban marriage between carriers, and let family members without bad genes marry each other? Banning incentuous marriage keeps these couples in the closet, deterring them from seeking genetic screening, which would help them decide whether they could safely have kids. The crude assumption that children of incest will turn out badly leads to unnecessary abortions.
If you're afraid of mandatory genetic testing and you'd prefer to ban marriage among people in high-risk categories, why not start with fertile women over 40? And what about ethnicity? Incest couples compare laws against cousin marriage to laws against interracial marriage. They've got it backward. Sickle-cell anemia runs in blacks. Tay-Sachs runs in Jews. The best way to curtail such diseases would be to ban marriages within ethnic groups.

In the USA, our body of law is based on English Common Law. We get all sorts of things from that, like the notion of who owns an item, or the idea of trial by jury.
The only state in the US which doesn't derive it's laws from English Common Law is Louisiana, which originally used French Law, and the Napoleonic Code, for their laws. Most of that has been replaced, however, because so much of their legal code deals with laws at a higher level (as in the state or Federal level), which uses the laws of the USA in general, rather than regional laws.
If you are wondering what the heck English Common Law is, it was the body of laws commonly used in England which developed over time starting at around the time of the Anglo-Saxons. Those laws were used in "common" courts, meaning they were used for small matters, such as disputes between land owners, or owners of a business and clients. Higher matters were heard by higher courts, but English Common Law was what developed over time when people needed to settle disputes at a local level.

Are you for real??? So you are telling us that if all the men in Maine decided that having sex with children was socially acceptable...Maine would pass that law? You did not read anything I just sent you to read did you?...Because you would known that your statement was not completely truthful. And that is my point! Deceit, deceit, and more deceit. Mr.Publikwerks...if that were the case don't you think the Federal Government would have changed the law to do with gay marriages by now?

I am from the same planet you are Mr. Publikwerks...Just the thought of it...(shaking my head). There is alot more that goes into changing laws than social acceptability...Cocaine and illegal drug use are very acceptable through out this country...and Maine is far from being exempt.
Are you telling me you truly believe that every druggie can have the laws changed because it is socially acceptable? You sir have truly lost it.( I am saying this in the kindest of terms)

When black people got equal rights was it because of the color of their skin that made those rights "special?" And if you say that being gay is a choice, you are an idiot, so discussion is pointless.

Ludicrous. (You.)
Incest and pedophilia are crimes because they are committed against people who have no say in the matter, committed by someone in a position of authority. These aren't "relationships" entered into consentually: there is no two-way street in pedophilia/incestuous relationships.
So are you saying, by extension, that all or most pedophiles are gay? (Not true.) Are you implying that all or most homosexuals are pedophiles-in-waiting? (Laughably untrue.)
I will say that at least your "honesty" on this matter is refreshing, if personally repulsive. At least you are out-and-out anti-homosexual, and not just rehashing the erroneous "save marriage" or "save our schools" arguments.

Adult consentuous Incest Marriage is already legal for first cousins...They can have children together...it is Maine Law...So here's a question for you. Why will it not be lawful for same sex immediate family members be able to get married if they can not procreate? And when will the physical attraction begin? If Daddy loves his son enough and vise versa Mom's and daughters, etc....maybe someday they can get married...Common sense!
The laws for incest do not cover same sex marriages...Wow, educate yourself about Maine laws.

First, I'm not anti gay, I'm anti special rights, which is what this boils down to. Second, pedophilia, bestiality, incest, these are all sexual preferences that the people say they are born with the same as the gay community. I'm not implying anything about the sexuality of pedophiles. However, the gay community thinks that sexual preference is a reason to be awarded special rights, so why not other sexual preferences. Why not allow polygamy? Why not abolish the age of consent if the two believe that hey are in love enough to wed? Nice to see that if someone has a differing opinion from a liberal or the gay community they are simply labeled as anti gay, or hateful or bigoted. What happened to the vaunted open minds of the left? Is that only when you agree, or were they left open so long that your brains fell out?

If it's not sexual preference then what is it? I'm simply using the English language as it is defined. If you can come up with a better phrase, please do. Until then, I'll keep using this one. Sad that my verbiage is the only thing you can actually attack in your reply. Not the context. Tells me a lot. Like you got nuthin'.

Should we change laws concerning Consentual Adult incest? These people will tell you that they can't help who they fall in love with. Everyone has an excuse...What you are asking for is a free for all....not equal rights. Shall you call me a bigot if I am against incestuous marriages?
