E. Field: Concepts are not important

Many Republicans are publicly wondering why they lost seats in the recent election and failed to win the presidency. Apparently, they haven’t noticed that women, immigrants, gay people, seniors, the poor, the middle class and racial and religious minorities are tired of being ignored, disrespected and patronized.

Democrats believe that Medicare and Social Security should be available without major cuts for those who qualify. Democrats also believe that assisting with early education, job training, infrastructure improvements, police and rescue services, programs such as FEMA, health care and food stamps are proper functions of government, and that everyone should pay his fair share of taxes.

None of those concepts seem important to Republicans.

They have conveniently forgotten that their hero Ronald Reagan started with a tax cut but then raised taxes 11 times. He added more than 60,000 government workers (Department of Veterans Affairs) and the national debt went from $700 billion to $3 trillion under Reagan. He also worked cooperatively and compromised with Democrats. He clearly would not be acceptable to today’s party.

This is the United States of America, not every state and every person for himself. I grew up believing that those who are fortunate should care about those who are not. That once-common American belief has been abandoned by the Republican Party.

Great letter Ellen

but Republicans now live on an "alternative planet" where up is down and down is up. The Administration that expanded the Federal role more than any other, the Bush administration, and doubled Reagan's accomplishment of tripling the debt (600 ship Navy when we needed less than 300, star wars, regulations rewarding corporations for exporting jobs not products) didn't exist. They want to make certain that we give handouts only to the super rich; that we re-distribute wealth from the poor and middle class to the rich.
They will never accept that their views lead this country only to doom. Thankful enough of us knows that and they frighten enough of the people who don't that all their glory is behind them.

Your rant provides not quantitative data.

1. Perhaps you should compare what was offered up as assistance back then as compared to now. There are many more assistance programs offered to the “less fortunate” today.
2. Back then, it was called charity. People gave of their own free will; now it is compulsory.
3. Here we go again throwing out the term “fair share” without any quantification.

Let’s face it, this country is bankrupting itself and all with it. Government spending is the highest since WWI. Personally, I do not think it is fair to spend your money and mine. That is greedy and immoral.

This crap about “fair share” is just a clock to steal from others. Just consider what you will do when all the geese with the golden eggs migrate to warmer climates.

Scrooge maybe...

.....but before his conversion. Just like Ayn Rand, before she needed end of life, government help - which she gladly took.

It's one thing to be young and healthy and sneer at those less fortunate. Just wait until the shoe is on the other foot and see how fast that disdain is turned into gratefulness.

If we weren't the policeman of the world, there would be plenty of money for all sorts of government spending, like roads and infrastructure, education, health care, job creation,etc.etc.

And all the bickering over the few measly crumbs left over for we the people would quiet down. It wouldn't cease, however. There would always be the selfish devils who think we do not need to give to those less fortunate, despite the teachings of Christ. Yet many of these same selfish devils say we live in a Christian nation. Go figure.
