R. Jensen: Rise above the negativity

This is in response to Mary Jane Newell's letter (Nov. 25). Why do some people spread such negativity and erroneous statements? She, Thomas Shields and a host of others of their like are classic examples of what is wrong with this proud nation today.

Letters of that sort do nothing to encourage or otherwise produce a sense of unity among citizens. The public should all get together and support the government by communicating to elected officials in Congress and, yes, to the president. We should tell them we want them to quit the bickering and mean-spiritedness and work together for the good of this nation and its people.

Only in such a fashion will people be able to rise above the negativity and realize positive actions that will help to cure the problems faced by this country today.

Richard Jensen, Minot

i remember a few years ago

i remember a few years ago when people were comparing the president of the united states to hitler and immigration reform to the holocaust. i don't recall anyone complaining about negativity then, just claims that it was all true and within their rights to say it. funny how things change depending on whose in charge.
the "negative" people are within their rights to point out deficiencies in government. this is how we balance the government. rather then just silently following like sheep, we question and think and check. we analyze government officials' every move so that we know our interests are being heard, and speak up when we feel that they are not. that is what makes this country great, the fact that we are allowed these rights which not every country has. keep up the good work questioning and "being negative", stay American.

In regards to the letter that

In regards to the letter that the OP is referencing, there is a huge difference between pointing out deficiencies and perpetuating misinformation.

How quickly you forget how people like the Dixie Chicks were shunned and all the "if your not with us your against us" rhetoric. Funny how our memories can be selective depending on who's in charge.

Wonder how many you listed...

...receive our tax money to further their causes? I would imagine it's not very many.

Also, please don't confuse tax exemption with taxpayer funded; it's not the same thing.

Keep the letters coming Dr.

Keep the letters coming Dr. Shields. I enjoy them. Shine the light on the people who hate the light of day.

I just can't stand by and watch mud slinged at Dr. Tom Shields and those who speak out against lack of responsibility and what used to be called "common sense."

He is an educated man of medicine, straightforward, honest and trustworthy, a military veteran, a man of deeds not words.

This ad Hominem attack against the person rather than the idea, speaks more to what is wrong with America.

I'll tell you what is wrong with America...

- The family unit is broken fractured almost beyond repair! This is #1.

- Being selfish instead of selfless. Caring more for the special interests than for the majority of Americans. There are thousands of special interests groups all chasing our tax dollars without producing anything except exceptionalism for those they claim to represent.

- We are spending money we don't have, borrowing on credit for wants not needs.

- Falling into the trap of blaming America for the way foreign leaders treat their own people.

- Politicians who "buy" votes by passing special interest legislation.

- Giving up our national security without a shot being fired; and attacking those who, raise the issue, and/or try to fix it like the Governor of Arizona.

Keep going Dr. Shields we need people like you now more than ever. At least half the country is behind you.
