Maine delegation mixed on gun-control laws

PORTLAND (AP) — Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is calling for a reinstatement of the ban on military-style assault weapons and other new federal gun control laws in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting.

But the Portland Press Herald reports that other members of Maine's congressional delegation are being less specific about what if any changes are needed.

A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said in a written statement that the Republican feels the nation must look at steps to control gun violence, while respecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud said in a statement that there will be time for discussion in the future, but now is not the time for politics.

Sen.-elect Angus King, an independent, said Congress should take a closer look at assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition clips.

Gun Control Laws

The first person you will call when someone breaks into your house or trys to harm you or yours is a person with a gun ! and that is a fact plan and simple ! Check out what your liberal heroes have been up to from Wikipedia Gun politics

Senator Feinstein had experienced 2 assassinations as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors where Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were killed while in office. In 1993, Feinstein, along with then-Representative Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Ted Kennedy (whose lost 2 of his brothers to assassination), led the fight to ban many semi-automatic firearms and restrict the sale of firearm magazines deemed assault weapons. The ban was passed as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. In 2004, when the ban was set to expire, Feinstein sponsored a 10-year extension of the ban as an amendment to the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act; while the amendment was successfully added, the act itself failed.[24] The act was then revived in 2005, and, despite Feinstein's best efforts, was passed without an extension of the assault weapons ban. In response to the Sandy Hook school shootings which left 20 children killed, Sen. Feinstein has reintroduced legislation to reinstate the ban.Feinstein said on CBS-TV's 60 Minutes, February 5, 1995, "If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them . . . Mr. and Mrs. America, turn 'em all in, I would have done it. I could not do that. The votes weren't here."[24]
In July 2006, Feinstein voted against the Vitter Amendment to prohibit Federal funds being used for the confiscation of lawfully owned firearms during a disaster.[25] [26]
Feinstein possessed a concealed handgun permit in the early 70's "And, I know the sense of helplessness that people feel. I know the urge to arm yourself because that's what I did. I was trained in firearms. I'd walk to the hospital when my husband was sick. I carried a concealed weapon. I made the determination that if somebody was going to try to take me out, I was going to take them with me." -- 27 April 1995 [27][28] Typical Liberal BS good for you not for me I'm above the rules I make I'm a liberal and your a bigot

The grandstanding has started in full....

It is just so embarrassing to watch this long line of politicians, parade on the different news outlets to push their own particular cure all gun control laws. I just heard the first to blame the president, evidently he should have solved all the gun violence in the country after a shooting that occurred two years ago. Mayor Bloomberg, I of NY, just enlightened all of us that 30% to 50% of all guns sold last year were sold with out background checks. That is a legitimate claim, so we'll pass a law to make all gun purchases require a background check, I have no problem with that. Another pointed out that the size of the ammunition clip was to big, again a legitimate argument, I have no problem with that. Now to get to the root of the problem. We need to ban assault rifles. After all they're relatively easy to get and have no other use than to inflict severe soft tissue damage. Not to forget that they look scary as hell. O.K., even though I have owned two "Bushmasters" in my younger years, I'll go along with that. Lets revue, Background checks, smaller ammunition clips, ban on assault rifles, we could go on for hours but lets just use these, which have been front and center on today's news shows. First, Background checks: I agree with this requirement, however we live in a society that prides itself on shirking the law. Of everything in this state, this country, that is required to be registered, there is still that segment of our population who, for what ever reason, can't obey the law. How many automobiles are pulled over every year in Maine, with the wrong registration plates on them? Not expired, the wrong ones. How many people are pulled over each year in Maine, with no drivers license? Or better yet, revoked or suspended licenses. I remember years ago, sitting in the smoke shack at work at two thirty in the morning having a cigarette, while the plant was with out electricity. Some guy down the road was driving on shear ice at a high rate of speed, in a borrowed Nissan, he hit another car coming the other direction. He killed himself, three of his friends, two people in the other car, and their dog. Did I mention he was driving under the influence, and on a suspended license? Now there's some laws in affect to save lives, They may have worked too, if there were anyone other than human beings put in there to obey them. Lets move on, ammunition clips: This one is an easy one to come up with quick, to support your argument. That is, as long as no one is aware of what there real purpose is. Not to mention, that I'll be willing to bet the two hand guns he was carrying had large clips as well. You just can't see them. Ammunition clips are used to reload very quickly. Thats why they are even available, It takes about five seconds to change a clip, and chamber the next round, a little faster with practice. Now on to the biggie. Banning assault rifles: If history has taught us anything, its that banning something does little else but create a bigger market for it. I'm not even going to mention "alcohol" or "drugs", there to easy. I'll bet, people might be surprised at the fact that "large volume ammunition clips", for AR15's, Bushmasters and other assault type weapons are flying off the internet today just at the mere mention of a ban on the larger clips. Thats how it works in America. We can regulate everything so much it hurts. We can pass so many laws, that everything will be illegal. It won't stop "Jack". Somehow, somewhere, someone will be just physco enough to pull it off, it never fails.
Mayor Bloomberg, pointed out that 30% to 50% of all gun buyers went unchecked last year, you will never hear a politician tell you that 100% of all guns stolen last year, were stolen. Thats because there is no way to stop it, and they know it.....

FRANK EARLEY's picture

It only looks good on paper....

Try going into down town South Central LA, what do you think they have been trying to do for the last several decades? You can't expect that just banning something will solve the problems. You mention Great Britain, even their police are starting to arm themselves. The changing of the guard has gone to arming the police. Times are changing and not for the better. You can ban guns, but you can never reduce their numbers. Realistically it will never happen.....

China

China has gun control. On the same day as this... for lack of stronger language... 'evil event' in Newtown, a man in China wounded 22 children at an elementary school with a knife. Other school attacks in China this year included an axe attack that killed several children and other knife attacks. All at schools and targeting children. (I'm not making this up... google it. I'm not hearing much about it on the main-stream media.)

These events are terrible and evil things, no matter the weapon of choice.

I don't have any political solutions to what's going on, except the extreme- at least in our culture- of requiring every teacher to be armed (see Israel, and their low school violence stats).

My point here, however, is that gun control won't stop these attacks. They will continue as long as the attackers think they will have success and media attention. Gun control will only ensure that evil school gunman have an opposition-free opportunity to make whatever sick statement they're trying to make, with the assurance of media coverage. (To say nothing of leaving people defenseless and worse- yes worse: leaving the Government in full control of our future. We the people are supposed to have that power.)

The liberals should stop this gun-control nonsense. Their use of this 'incident' for a misguided attack on the second amendment leaves me feeling a little ill.

RONALD RIML's picture

Bob - Better feeling a 'Little ill' than a 'Lot Dead'

You can stop your nonsense at any time..........

Bob Berry's picture

Fluffy wishes

since your attack (comment) left much to be desired in the way of clarity, I'll assume you're suggesting that we should be disarmed so that no one can hurt children. Better to swallow the bitter pill of less individual rights than suffer the dead. Do I have that right?

I do not want to see children hurt. No sane man does. No loving father does.

However, what you call nonsense I call the Bill of Rights. I find it offensive that you would call nonsense the sacrifice of countless Americans in defense of those Rights.

I also find your nonsense comment nonsensical. You don't need 'assault' rifles to wreak mayhem. That can be done with shotguns, handguns, an axe, a common kitchen knife, or the fists of a big man. Timothy McVeigh used fertilizer. On 9/11 they used box cutters and airplanes.

But if I ever find myself in a situation to defend someone against a man with evil intentions, I hope I have my AR. I hope that never happens, but I will kill to protect children, and "harsh language" isn't going to get it done.

The idea that we can protect school children by limiting or removing guns from the general populace is simply a fluffy wish. Criminals don't obey laws, so they'll get the guns. Even if they don't have a gun, they can do it with common tools, as proved by that (substitute the word 'jerkface' to avoid sensoring) in China last Friday who cut 20 school children with a knife before stopped.

Gun control isn't about guns, it's about control. All you anti-gunners are seizing on this terribly evil event in Newtown to push your agenda of control. That's what I feel ill about.

RONALD RIML's picture

Bob - I glanced at your profile

Now that's something that left a lot to be desired.

Whats the point....

Gun control laws only work if people obey them. Responsible gun owners, obey gun laws. People who have mental issues, or are somewhat unstable, who somehow get it in their head, they want to do something like this, will do it. They will lie, cheat or steal. they may legally purchase their own weapon if the are legally eligible, or not yet prohibited. How ever they decide to do it, they will do it. Every possible gun law in the world won't stop them. As I mentioned earlier, only responsible gun owners obey gun laws. For everyone else, we have responsible gun owners......

RONALD RIML's picture

Gun Control Laws work.....

Gun Control

The second amendment was put in place to protect the citizens from government tyranny there for to be protected as per the intent of the US constitution the people should be as well armed as the government and we are not allowed to be ! " A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed". Don't be miss led by the liberal mantra of so called assault weapons when they say this they mean sniper rifles, translated to common terms your hunting rifle ! Or they say riot guns, translated to common terms your shot gun ! Or they say why do you need a hand gun you cant hunt with that hand guns are used to kill people. I guess they never been coon hunting ! What the communistic socialistic Marxist government wants is to disarm the population so they can take over much more easily its harder to oppress an armed population than an unarmed one just look at the lessons of history ! Guns are not the reason this stuff happens their has yet to be a school shooting in Maine almost every home here has a gun in it . I think we should put a ban on planes how many people where killed when the wackos flew in to the twin towers with them. I mean planes kill people right oh you dont agree with that planes dont kill people do exactly guns dont kill people do ! Take a look at Switzerland everyone is required to own and gun and taught how to use them by the government yet a very low crime rate interesting ! Also Maine high gun ownership yet the most peaceful state in the US for 11 years running so what a bout gun control ? What we need in this country is a return to the moral core our for fathers founded this nation on what we need is more liberal control. The person committed the crime not the tool that was used if not we must also ban Planes, knifes, Axes, autos, Gasoline, Hammers, etc etc or anything else that can be used to commit a crime oh I just thought of another one hands lets ban hands a little common sense people please !
