I am looking at the horror of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., from the perspective of Adam Lanze; an unpopular view, I am sure.
As someone who suffers from mental illness, I can say from experience that others cannot begin to fathom the mental agony and mental torture Lanze had to have been experiencing prior to shooting his own mother, the staff and innocent children at the school and eventually himself.
In no way am I minimizing or excusing Lanze's actions or the grief the victims' families must be experiencing. The guilt and grief that Lanze's family must be experiencing must also be heavy.
All the victims and their families need our prayers and support.

...talk with anyone in law enforcement.
It is especially concerning at 2:00 in the morning when they respond to a 9-11 call and have no medical history on the person they are dealing with who is barricaded in.
We emptied the hospitals and institutions who were providing help to those with mental illness, but in a misguided effort we released them onto the streets and think we did something positive.
Many with mental illness have no one to make sure they take their medications...
...follow their treatment plans, no one to make sure they are safe from personal harm and do no harm to others.
This was a big mistake, and will take a community willingness to address this issue with compassion and common sense instead of political correctness.
