New mom rings in the new year with son

Jose Leiva/Sun Journal

Amina Sharif, 20, of Lewiston, holds her son who was born at 4:26 a.m. Jan. 1 at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

LEWISTON — Amina Sharif tried everything she could think of to kick-start labor.

She walked. She did squats. She trod up and down stairs.

Her baby was supposed to be born days before Christmas. A week and a half later, he still hadn't come.

But on New Year's Eve, the 20-year-old from Lewiston started to feel contractions. Maybe the stairs worked, maybe squatting on a large ball helped. Or maybe the boy just held out for a memorable birth date.

After 15 hours of labor, Sharif gave birth at 4:26 a.m. to Lewiston-Auburn's first baby of 2013.

"It's very exciting," Sharif said, looking tired but happy surrounded by cousins and aunts in a maternity room at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center.

The boy, who weighed just over 7 pounds, hasn't been officially named yet, though Sharif was leaning toward the name Imran before he was born.

The baby is Sharif's first. His father is Mohamed Rashid.

Although a Jan. 1 birthday is special, it's not so unique among Lewiston-Auburn's Somali families because immigrants and refugees are often assigned Jan. 1 as a birth date when they don't have birth records from their home country.

"We were joking about that," said Maryan Hassan, Sharif's cousin. "We were like, 'Oh, he's going to fit right in now because everyone else's (birthday) is on the first day.'"

Sharif's son remained the Tri-County area's first baby of 2013 until 7:17 a.m. when Arianna Alizabeth Harmon was born to Courtney and Andrew Harmon at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. Arianna is the Dixfield couple's third child, but their first girl.

I do love to Toy with you You are such an Easy Target

I am flattered that you would suggest me as an interragator. Had I been Born in Isreal I would have relished the idea of interrogating those Gaza Strip Squatters

Ron, OMG, once again we are on the same side...

what a trend.

It renews my faith in America, to see folks speak out on this issue. We are judged by how we defend our most helpless.

Happy New Year to Amina and our newest Mainer!

I Strongly disagree with your Position about whose right and where that Right is most Comfortable.

I also Take issue with the Manner in which you Dressed me down this morning.

Frankly speaking I have enjoyed a pleasent Envirionment with the Staff of the Sun Journal.

However Unfortunately that does not extend towards you. Since when did asking a Question that many outside of this Realm would be thinking?

What Gives you the right to be Judge and Jury?

I will wait and reserve my opinion about her intentions

David Cote
Let's set things straight.I do not feel the need to defend or apologize for my Remarks you and your fellow Apologits are doing fine without me.

I Secondly do not normally engage with Poster like your self. Because David when you have finished writing you have sid little or nothing of Value.

I do indeed stand by my Remarks. I as an American Citizen have the right of Freedom of Speech. Now to your Point of bringing it on myself.

I knew when I wrote what I did . I would elicit remarks from Posters such as yourself.

I am also not Blaming anyone for what they may have written.
However to many in the Real World my remarks was a Pleasent Music to their Ears.

Oh Well David if you are expecting me to Wilt under your self imposed standard of Rules and your very open ended perception of the World.
Dream on.

But the real Question that I ponder is what is stated below here on the Sun Journal Web Site Defamatory,Abusive,Obscene,Racist or other wise Hateful

Now I certainly can understand the Defamatory and Obscene issue. However the Racist issue or hateful Issue.

Would that Hold up say in the U S Supreme Court? I doubt it Would.

Oh yes Folks like you and Kristina and Abdi?? and Charlotte Ronald Rimi will of course Wrap yourselves in the Flag of Rainbow Colors that the Sun Journal has seen fit to promote.

The New Mom

Well I fully expected the 'Confederacy of Dunces' to be formed upon submitting my Remarks.

The Remarks that were posted are as Precitable as one could Expect.

Now Understand Kris and Kristina and Of Course {ABdI} and I nearly forgot Mike Sergent's remarks about my Capacity for Shame.

To Be Frank with Each of you. Your Postins were as 'Vile' and as mean Spirited as my remarks were wrongly Accused of Being Shameful

Be Advised I'll be the Dispenser of Shame and Frankly speaking it will be a Long Time before you see Me Bending to Please Folks of your Ilk

Of Course anyone in the Real World that I Live in would laugh out loud at the Notion that I'm a Racist.

Now Moving on where was the Father of this Child?

Is that not a Fair Question to Ask?

Usually as is the Case when we see a story about a New years Baby we see the Proud Mom and Dad present in the Picture.

I Also see the Patti Reaves felt the need to issue her Decree stating that my Remarks were Hurtfull.

No Surprise there. How is it so commonly Said Patti?

Oh yes I was Just Following Orders?

Well I seem to have Upset the 'Applecart'

Oh Well such as it is. Also to Address { David Cote's Point } I will Decide what Soul Searching Needs to be done.

I seriously Doubt if I'll have Room in My Heart for the Kind of Soul Searching that you are Advocating.

Finally I would thank { John Clements } and {Paul St Jean} for you Kind Words.
It is Obvious John and Paul that you are Bright enough to see the Forest through the Downed Tress

Now I must say that if it were up to the Sun Journal Management to suspend me for Violating their Policy it would not mean much to me.

I so Seldom comment on Stories these Days and if I were to be censored or Silenced by the Policy of Sun Media.

Well I can assure you that It would not even be a Ripple in the Water.

To be more clear it would make sense to have a Quality Poster like Myself particapating than to Muzzel me. Without Contributions from Someone like myself

Your Blog would be Predictable and Pedestrian and Nobody with any Intelligent Value Sense would read what Folks like my Attackers would write.

If, as you state, your original remarks were "wrongly accused of being shameful", then why do you feel it neccessary to defend them? If you're so adament as to your rightousness then why feel the need to even acknowledge anything negative said about you? There was no reason for you to take your comment into the direction you chose. It was a simple story about a New Year baby, yet you decided to spin it toward a direction it did not deserve to go to. I do understand your right to express your views. That street works both ways. You need to respect others rights as well. Calling those that disagree with you out like you have only solidifies my original thoughts even further. So go ahead and blame others for what they believe. You brought this on yourself.

racism is a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. I fail to see where Richard said anything racist. He just asks some questions that no one will answer. the real racists are the ones that try to shout him down. And as for ron riml, when you don't have a valid response it is the typical response of a small minded bigot to resort to name calling and ad hominem attacks. now everyone out of the wagon and start pulling.

John Clement - You've got quite a Horn to Trumpet!!

Doesn't take much of a Google Search to find out why your so Unhappy there Bristol, TN

You've got a lot of gall talking about us up in Maine

Social Apartheid in Tri-Cities Bristol Virginia-Tennessee 2011

Welcome to Tri-Cities and Bristol VA/TN. We are part of Southern Appalachia, a region more like a third-world banana republic. Bristol, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee is a divided city (by the VA/TN state line) symbolic of the division in our region as our many bickering local governments waste more tax dollars with the least results of anywhere in America. They maintain a system I describe as social apartheid; University of New Hampshire's Cynthia M. Duncan calls it Worlds Apart in her book on "Why Poverty Persists in Rural America."

The Virginia Employment Commission has released the Community Profiles for Washington and Smyth Counties. The job outlook is dismal as manufacturing will continue to decline and the lowest paid least stable occupations follow the above illustration.

Crime Watch Bristol Virginia/Tennessee 2012

In this series of reports we will take a hard look at drugs and crime in Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee, and Bristol VA/TN. According to my local sheriff 90% of the crime in this area is related to drugs. This means everything from home meth labs to outside gangs from large urban areas coming into the area to supply the demand. We have few options for treatment with the determined effort by many communities to keep out treatment centers. There is little hope for solving the problem anytime soon.

I will look at these issues without the political correctness the press often operates under. While some will cry "racism" this is merely to reflect racial proportion of those committing the crimes. On the one hand whites are often the operators of the typical "home brew" meth lab while blacks and Hispanics, often operating with urban/national black and Hispanics gangs and criminals, account for most of the outside drug traffic.

Sullivan County Tennessee Exposed 2012

Sullivan County, Tennessee is at the heart of Tri-Cities Virginia/Tennessee. In the past the County had been embroiled in religious controversy, but in 2012 it's back to taxes.

Sullivan County like East Tennessee in general is bright red Republican. That means no new taxes - of any kind. So the Sullivan County Board of Supervisors struggles to fund all their pet projects. One of those pet projects is not the county jail.

The jails are bursting with white people arrested on drug charges. According to press reports the Sullivan County jail, which was recently expanded to accommodate 600, has more than 800 prisoners. It's so bad inmates are sleeping in cots or on the floor. Sullivan County Sheriff Wayne Anderson is so fed up over funding he is looking at alternative forms of sentencing such as ankle bracelets.

The reason for so many people in jail according to Sheriff Anderson is drugs and alcohol:

"I would say without a doubt that if there ever is a study done in that jail, I would go so far as to say the reason that 90 to 95 percent of everybody who is in our jail has to do with drugs or alcohol - the abuse of drugs or alcohol. People end up doing stupid things on drugs."

Funding for the jail has been so heated one commissioner Bob Neal of Bristol accused the Sheriff's Office of "sucking the county dry." Sheriff Wayne Anderson shot back against Mr. Neal's 'assessment' as "uneducated ... considering all that we have done to cut costs." The problem is the County is loath to raise taxes for anything. To quote the Bristol Herald Courier July 17, 2012.

John - I can keep going for hours. But it seems like you're running a Day Care Center for Social Misfits and Neanderthals down there. And you're complaining about Maine and Democrats? My - you have SO much to be proud of.

Since you have taken it upon

Since you have taken it upon yourself to be the arbiter of all that is good and pure of the leftists and all that is bad and evil of the right (read that as apparently everyone and everything) and since this is an open forum I can comment on your posts as long as I adhere to the guidelines. You on the other hand have to sink to snide innuendos and baseless accusations about anyone that does not have the groupthink of you leftists. I choose to live here based on economics; there is no income tax here, the property tax is 1/5 of what it was in ME, winters are mild and we don’t pay $3.50 a gallon for heating oil, the deep freeze doesn’t occur so the roads are as they were put down with no potholes. This is a very polite and civil area, most people say "yes ma'am, no ma'am, yes sir, no sir" regardless of the age of the people they are talking to. We did the math and figured we wouldn’t have much of a retirement in ME but here we would reduce expenses by maybe $8,000 per year. After 2 years it appears we were wrong, we reduced them by about $12,000. I grew up in Bangor and lived and worked in Lewiston from 1988 to 2011 primarily in the inner city with the desperately poor. From 24 years of that I can tell you with some certainty that the poor get that way from poor impulse control, decision making and indifference to any set rules that govern polite society. The only thing they are interested in is the next high or the next bottle of booze. There is no such thing as the noble poor; most of those people would sell their grandmother out for a bag of dope. It’s not rocket science, the first thing to do to change the culture is to tell the females we aren’t paying you to have kids and they would stop spreading their legs for the young Lotharios. After that the men would have to pay attention in school to get a decent job and a good life partner. But since your style of argument is baseless accusations here’s one; you moonbat leftists appear to enjoy the destruction of the American society and culture without realizing that once unleashed, the change will be impossible to control and when there finally is chaos and anarchy do you really think you will be able to stand in front of a mob of unruly illiterate thugs and say to them “hey I was the one that helped to create this” and have them pass you by? They will steamroll you like a tin can. Good luck with that.

RONALD RIML's picture

Baseless Innuendos????

Tennessee has a much higher violent crime rate - per 100,000 population - than does Maine. Your 'Society and Culture' is destructing down there while ours is peaceful. "Polite and Civil Area?" Sure, while they shoot, rob, murder, and assault the hell out of one. You can have that....

Obviously you're not familiar with the FBI's 'Uniform Crime Reports

Compare the 'Violent Crime Rates' - equalized per 100,000 population, between Maine and Tennessee That includes Homicide, Rape, and Aggravated Assault :

ME: 123.2
TN: 608.2

- So Tennessee has a Violent Crime Rate 4.93 times greater than Maine for the same 100,000 population. Now that's real "Polite and Civil" there, John. I'd hate to see them when they're flat-out mad and angry - drunk and mean........

So you chose to live where taxes are low. Well, John - you get what you pay for. If you haven't figured that out in life by now, then there's no teaching you at this point. I'm going out of this life with exactly what I brought in - so I'd rather live well.

(And notice that hasn't included one word here of irrational tirade about folks on the other end of the political spectrum - and I spent most of my working life in a city that made Bangor and Lewiston look like the Ritz....)

KRIS KUCERA's picture

Racism is judgement/persecution based on color or creed.

If was a white woman with a white kid, would Richard have posted his offensive invective? Obviously not.

Few racists say they're racists. This is such an obvious case that you are either totally tone-deaf, or are, in fact, racist yourself, John.

Richard's questions are not just racist -- they're tactless, ill-timed, and ill-conceived. The birth of a healthy child -- a New Year baby to boot -- is a joyous event. It ain't time for a bigoted inquiry, which Richard's most certainly is. But hey, ignorance is bliss, John.

Maybe Richard (and you too?) should be at the all maternity wards checking all mothers for insurance and skin color as a Reverse Candy Striper? Now that's the New Year spirit for ya. I mean, holy cripes.

David Cote's picture

What a cute little boy...

Nothing more precious in this world to behold than the face of a newborn child. Coming in a close second is the maternal glow of a woman having just given birth. What a beautiful picture of these two. This young man holds the promise of the future in his grasp. He is capable of accomplishing great things in his life. Maybe he will become a doctor and find a cure for cancer. Or he may become an engineer and invent a better way to build bridges and other structures we use every day. Perhaps he will be a scholar and write a great essay or book that causes us to consider a viewpoint we may have ignored. Maybe, as he grows up, he will be subjected to hateful comments like a certain one posted here and hold his head high knowing the man he is and turn the negativity into a postitive, worthwhile action. The sky's the limit for this child and personal attacks in print against him and his family shoots way past cruelty. There should be a desolate island for those who speak of hate to reside on, a place where misery does indeed love company. A hearty congrats to you, Amina and Mohamed on the arrival of your new baby boy. And Richard...time for you to do some soul searching. Who knows, you just may be lucky enough to find one.

Who pays the Bills here?

I'm glad that you are leaving his vile comment up. It's not only important to do so to provide the context for the several replies. But it also helps remind us all of what kind of prejudice and ignorance we still have among us, lest we become complacent. I would join others in saying "shame on you" to Richard, but I would first want to see evidence that he has a capacity for shame.

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

Dosh's comment was

Dosh's comment was appropriate. Three disagreed with it and chose not to comment. Not necessarily out of cowardice. Some are just tired of being labeled something, whether it be bigot, racist, homophobe, etc. whenever they happen to take an opposing view of what the liberals and bleeding hearts may think is cool and appropriate. The Journal's policy does not require rationality nor is agreement with everyone else on the thread a requisite to participation.
Say something about obama that isn't patronizing; you're a racist. Say you don't think same -sex marriage is the way marriage was intended to be and you're automatically called mean spirited and bigot or homophobe. It gets really old after a while. I can easily see why some would rather just click the mouse and move on. I've thought about it a few times, but screw that; pissing liberals off once in a while is far too much fun to just walk away from. Actually, I'd prefer to get along with most, but a few just won't allow that to happen.
So, how was your New Year's Eve?

RONALD RIML's picture

I've never had a problem with voicing my reason

for disagreement.

"But how 'bout that Obama??" (Now there's the type of statement that invites remarks based upon one's political agenda)

"How about the way Mitch McConnell negotiated the settlement regarding the 'Tax Increase' and 'Spending Cuts' with Joe Biden? (Now I think that was done in an admirable manner - especially considering how the raise from $250K to $400K threshold was based upon the effects of inflation.)

See - two ways of looking at politics and politicians. A general question which invites "Same-Old / Same-Old" - and another where one goes into specifics. Specifics have been lacking - and I, too, have been guilty of that.

In the same day/issue of the paper appeared an article concerning a single mother with three children, who was making it while working at a job one would guess wouldn't quite pay the bills. No comments questioning any assistance. Yet we find these comments concerning a woman and child of another race and nationality.

I was disappointed to see the return of the Agree/Disagree function. Is it 'Conservative' or 'Liberal' to wish that the persons name would appear with their choice? I believe 'Conservative' - something about 'Personal Responsibility'

I'm labelled 'Liberal' all the time here. Appears no-one has any problem with that at all. Yet in some venues that is an insult - a curse hurled by the 'Firebrands' of Fox and Limbaugh-Ville......

I don't call anyone Racist, Bigot, or Homophobe - but I will describe their postings as such - as mine are Liberal. And as you know, I am ever ready to reference any claim that I make - much to the annoyance of many posters here.

My New Year's Eve?? Great! Every day for me is great..... I'm merely a curmudgeon on the Forums. Otherwise I'm a pussycat...... ;)

Peace Out.
