Maine officials try to solve wild boar mystery

MERCER (AP) — Maine wildlife officials say a wild boar shot by a hunter in Somerset County did not have rabies or any swine viruses that could endanger domestic pigs, but still have no idea where the animal came from.

Kendall Marden, a wildlife biologist with the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, told the Morning Sentinel "nobody has any answers."

The boar was shot and killed by a hunter the day after Thanksgiving when the animal attacked and killed a domestic pig in Mercer.

Game Warden Josh Bubier said state officials have contacted private hunting preserves in New England to find its origin with no luck.

Bubier said the boar had not been castrated and had no markings, tags or tattoos indicating it had been raised commercially.

Who in his right mind would

Who in his right mind would attempt to castrate a wild boar? What would a tattoo on a wild boar say, "MOM"?

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

Yup, the wild boars are

Yup, the wild boars are coming. We're all doomed now. Next thing you know, glaciers will be melting.

They're at fault.

I personally feel that porkers are actually the root cause of global warming. The truffles, you see, make them gassy.

That theory makes a lot more

That theory makes a lot more sense than most of the stuff we're being told by the so called "experts".

It's called Climate Change.

There're wild boar in NY now. There're armadillos in Illinois. Look at the pine beetle devastation out West. Or the ash borer, or the explosion of the tick population in Maine in the last 20 years.

We can't keep proverbially peeing in the big fish bowl that is the earth and think there won't be negative consequences. Climate change is real, man-influenced, and the single biggest threat looming on the horizon. It ain't Revelations, it's a man-made self-fulfilling prophecy. And we're all to blame; even I have gas cars and an oil boiler.

Not to mention ocean acidification and warming, more results of the staggeringly copious combustion of fossil fuels. (Coal being enemy #1.)

But sure, it's all just a NASA hoax, right, Faux News fans? Just like all six American-manned moon landings, I'm sure. All fakes too, right?

It's been estimated that for every dollar spent on this earth, there's a liter of petrol behind each dollar -- in mining, manufacturing, distribution, infrastructure, etc.

Heck, even the corporations know it. And the market is always right, right? *wink* http://www.guardian.co.uk/sustainable-business/blog/pwc-climate-change-r...

Sweet...

I hear wild pig hunting is awesome! Bad for the farmers, though.

Bad all around

They are aggressive attackers and work in packs. So small children, animals and adults are endanger at all times. They will tree you and stay put until you fall from exhaustion. Like one Georgia cop told us, where we found my sister in law in the woods, was to keep our heads on a swivel.

Bob Berry's picture

Don't disagree...

Jerry, I don't disagree. I just hear they're fun hunting and good eating. My comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek. As for the aggressive attackers, sure. That won't stop me from going in the woods, but I might be armed more often. Then again, one isolated incident doesn't make an insurgency of porkers.

Hey, I wonder if IF&W will say there are no breeding pairs of wild pigs in Maine, like they say about mountain lions. :)

correction

are endanger at all times. ( are in danger at all times) oops!

Endangered would have worked

Endangered would have worked as well.
Hey, what happened to the Vikings? Was the absence of Ponder that significant?

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Vikings?

You must be referring to the barbaric explorers that are extinct, because those mooks in purple have been a great joke and is nothing but a paid comedy clan.

When I moved here 20 yrs ago, they were nothing and are nothing now. The new proposed stadium is great for events and workers but the purple freaks should move away.

I have and always will be a patriots supporter, and a New England-er, I am only here now due to the wife's profession.

We all do what we have to do.

We all do what we have to do. Maybe some day you'll be able to return to your roots. Meanwhile, GO PATS!! They need to be wary of the Texans, but should not fear them. Houston was able to manage only 4 field goals and 1 TD vs. the Bengals. The game isn't a gimme by any stretch, but if the Pats can score TDs when in the Red Zone (which they are very capable of doing), they should win it by 17.
I would welcome your thoughts on this upcoming game.

No interest

Sorry, I do not pay any attention to games other than the Superbowl and that is a far reach. I gave up on sports over 30 years ago. To much boredom, and time consumption. I enjoy good games all around but do not fall into the points counting and spreads as others enjoy, since I had friends lose their shirts, jobs and their families that both suffered due to their sickness on betting and couch potato laziness. I have other interests, that are more productive, and helping others in many needs.
Retirement gives me time to enjoy my wood working skills and outdoor activities.
As my father in law would say; "Every koch-sucker has their own taste.
