I am tired of reading about people's interpretation of the Second Amendment. The amendment reads “A regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
Some are indicating that refers to the National Guard. I find that naive. The whole purpose for a militia is to protect us from tyrannical rule, both foreign and domestic. The last time I checked, the National Guard is run by the government. That defeats the purpose and cannot be considered a militia.
I am appalled and shocked by what happened in Connecticut. It was an act of a criminal and coward. That person killed his mother and stole the guns. That makes him a murderer and a thief.
The premise still applies, if you take the guns away from the law-abiding citizens, only the criminals will have them and people will not be able to defend themselves.
If you look at what happened — the gun did not go to the school and start shooting — it was the person behind the gun.
What is being discussed about banning the high volume clips and banning certain weapons is an insult to the memory of those children. That will solve nothing. It is just a way to make people feel better about themselves.
People shouldn't be fooled by the media and politicians. It is not a gun control issue; it is a people issue.
Michael Jordan, Auburn

Some people will always break laws, so....
The conservative view seems to be, "Therefore, we should not have laws."
Burglary is illegal. Yet some people burglarize. No use having a law against it.
Murder is illegal, yet some people kill other people. No use having a law against it.
If there's a ban on certain types of weapons of mass destruction, some people will still acquire and use them. No use having a law against them.
I'd settle for a REDUCTION in mass murders.

...one person to be a "regulated militia" and the greatest threat to our freedom is our own government? Those National Guardsmen from Maine who have given their lives in defense of that freedom are what - dupes?

Michael, while your busy giving us your interpretation of the 2nd Amendment and throwing out that same stupid cliche' some nut is out there polishing his AR-15 and counting the 600 rounds of ammo. he's stashed to try to out do what other nuts did in Newtown CT. or a theater in CO..
Your letter, well meaning as you think it is, solves absolutely nothing and as long as folks like you do nothing---nothing will change and innocent young lives will continue to be lost.
Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly are doing SOMETHING. I strongly recommend that you and anyone reading this post become pro-active regarding ending these mass killings by going to americansforresponsiblesolutions.org and start doing something NOW.
Washington may shove something down our throats that we, as gun owners, don't want. Please read Gabby's plan and join us.

1. “AR-15 and counting the 600 rounds of ammo.” – I’m glad you can see the future.
2. “Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly are doing SOMETHING.” – I guess that is what counts even though there is no guarantee Giffords’ proposal would not have prevented the two shootings you mention.
3. I would say that America needs nothing from Washington, they give us enough headaches as is.

I get emotional every time these senseless massacres occur and your damned right I want to do something about it besides making stupid comments like the one you just made. Get a life, Gravel, don't just sit on your ass and criticize those of us who are smart enough to realize we have to step up to the plate and deal with this horrible problem in America.
Yes, my actions are emotionally motivated and I'm proud of it. What are you proud of? If you say"common sense ", I'll barf!

Your emotion does nothing to effect a workable solution. For example, the Federal Assault Weapons Ban did nothing to deter the Columbine High School Shooting.
The best you can say about all the proposed remedies thus far is that some solutions may slowdown these nuts, but do nothing to stop them.
Do you know that abuse of prescription pain medication kills slightly more people each year than guns accounting to Center for Disease Control statistics? Yet I hear silence from the emotional left.
Emotion always has and always will produce defective solutions. That said, I guess seeing a bad solution pacifies the emotional in our society.
