The constant paranoia from the NRA and its members with their constant fear that their guns (toys, hardly) are going to be taken from them just constantly makes me crazy.
All I have heard is talk about trying to be more responsible regarding gun ownership and which guns should or shouldn’t be allowed.
To me, there is absolutely no need for any citizen to own any weapon with automatic or rapid fire capability, or 30-plus round magazines. I do not see any other reason for an individual citizen having such. Firepower needs should be the business of law enforcement officials and the military.
I believe most rank and file members want weapons for the purpose of personal enjoyment, such as target practice, competitive marksmanship contests, hunting game and, as some claim, for protection.
Unfortunately, we live in a big world with a lot of people with a lot of ideas and some will act on their ideas, good or bad.
I don’t see trying to control the weapons I have mentioned as a bad idea, but I am sure there are some who won't agree simply because they want what they want. It isn’t about need, it is about ownership.
To me, that is not a valid reason.

They were designed and built to kill people. For our troops overseas, I'm really, really glad they have them. Why have these wing nuts in the last few years ALL chosen to use an assault rifle? Because it kills a lot of people quickly. Even six and seven year old kids. It can put eleven bullet holes in a six year old body in the blink of an eye. First, what is an assault rifle in your mind? I can have a semi-automatic that looks like a bolt action rifle and a semi-automatic rifle that is what we call an AR-15. They are both capable of holding 30 round clips. Just by looks, one would be an assault rifle and one will not even though both are just as deadly.
Second, I don’t hunt. I shot my first and last deer at age 19. Killing just didn’t feel right. That said, I do participate in competitive shoot that use rapid-fire weapons. Many of the local law enforcement also participate. The weapon of choice is the AR-15.
Third, the majority of the approximately 32,000 gun deaths each year involve a hand gun according to the CDC, especially for deaths of individuals under the age of 19 years old. Any ban on assault weapons, if you can defined that term, will not save very many lives. The legislative focus is misplaced. Why, well continually demonstrate why – emotion.
Lastly, note that the 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting. It has everything to do with allowing the people the means to repel an out of control government. If the Jewish people of Nazi Germany had weapons, perhaps they would have not sacrificed 6 Million people; a much bigger value than 20.

A good marksman with proper training ad a decent weapon can get off a respectable rate of fire with a bolt-action - but nothing comparable to a semi-automatic.
Mark no doubt hates this, but as a state-certified police firearms instructor, I consistently shot master class with a wheel-gun.
